Wiring Harness Routing Question

Everything is able to reach where it is supposed to go, except for the oil pressure sensor which should go next to the oil filter, it just won't reach there. But should this portion go from the EGR valve side of the engine to the other side of the engine from under the crankshaft pulley? Can't seem to reach the sensor though, maybe someone has a graphic or something to display how the wiring harness should go exactly? The latter would be perfect, but any tips are certainly welcome, want to do this right instead of having my wiring harness just hanging about or even having to extend wires just because it's in the wrong position, not to mention stuff like melting things because it's too close to the exhaust manifold or what not.

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

It's been a while since I had a V6 in my camaro, but I seem to recall it going around the back side of the engine, over the bellhousing, to reach the sensor.

Thanks for the reply, but that was a 3.1L then, right?

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

Yes, it was a 3.1. Externally the same as your 2.8, just with a longer stroke.

So on your engine it didn't run like this? BTW, on a side note, what kind of engine is in your car now?

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

Just checked the only pic I have of the front of the V6 and there are no harnesses running like that on it.

I swapped it for a carb'd 350 about 4 years ago.

Maybe it's a Firebird kind of thing? Since the picture is from a Firebird.

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

I suppose its possible, although I thought the engine harnesses were the same between firebirds and camaros.

Turns out they are te same save for some details due to the battery being in the other side in a Firebird. But I've figured out the routing now, wiring harness runs perfectly again. If anyone has any questions or would like any pictures then just hit me up!

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

Which side is your battery in? Mine is on the drivers side.

How did you end up running the wiring?

Or it's also a year thing, because mine is on the passenger side. The wiring runs through the firewall at the driver's side, then over the bellhousing, one part goes to the HVAC the other around the side of the engine where the starter is, then splits up like is shown in the picture I shared here with one part going up to the alternator and throttle body the rest going under the crankshaft pulley and back up again behind the power steering pump.

Re: Wiring Harness Routing Question

To tell the difference between the harnesses on a fuel injected V6...

1. A good number of Camaros have the battery on the passenger's side. Generally they have the "TPI" dual snorkel intake. 2.8 Birds cannot have the intake routed any other way and all have the battery on the driver's side (except possibly the carbed cars but they won't be discussed here). And the Camaro battery situation is why us Bird guys can't find replacement battery trays except on Camaros in junkyards...
2. They will have the charcoal canister on the driver's side as a result because you can't put it inside the battery. The wiring for the canister will end up on the driver's side as a result along with the IAT pigtail. And probably the MAF pigtail in 2.8 cars (not sure, haven't seen a complete one).
3. Everything else is identical EXCEPT between 2.8 and 3.1 cars.
3a. 2.8s will have 2 connectors for the injector harness and the 3.1s 1.
3b. 3.1s have 3 ECM connectors, 2.8s 2.
3c. 2.8s generally have 2 connectors for the HVAC system to connect the HVAC harness to the engine harness.
3d. 2.8 Birds have 2 harness connectors connecting the dash harness to the engine harness, C207 and C221. Camaros and 90+ only have C207.
3e. 2.8s will have a 3 pin MAF pigtail, which is black and has an orange wire in it. 3.1s have a green 3-pin MAP pigtail along the firewall which has gray, black, and green wires.
3f. 2.8s have a different round pin style VSS connector. 3.1s have flat pins in the VSS connector.
3g. 2.8s have a cold start injector connector coming out of the harness near the ICM pigtail. And also the CSI switch pigtail coming out of the injector harness.
3h. 3.1s have the knock sensor connector coming out of the harness by the starter solenoid wiring.
3i. 2.8s will have a switch in the power steering line. 3.1s do not as the engine load is monitored by the MAP.
4. Manual transmissions have either 1 or 2 2-wire connectors running to the transmission. One is the reverse light switch and the other is the VSS connector if you have one (Camaros not before 89-90, Birds before that, after 86, with the full gauge cluster and no idiot light cluster). Autos will have either a 4-pin (actually 3 pins and a plugged hole) connector alone or a 4-pin and a 2-pin (VSS again).

As for harness routing:
Main part of harness runs from the bulkhead connector on the driver's side to the pass-through on the passenger's side. Out of this comes the HVAC system connector(s), the wiper motor harness (before 90), the ICM pigtail, the CSI connector, rear injector harness connector (CSI and rear injector connector pre-90), part of harness running to IAT, MAF, and secondary junction block behind passenger's side headlights (along with the A/C switches), and transmission harness. Also out of the main harness comes the other half of the harness, running to the starter for providing main power via fusible links and the solenoid switch wire (and also the nearby knock sensor wire on the 3.1), which loops down and around the bottom front of the engine, around the crank pulley, towards the oil pressure sensor and up the driver's side for the A/C compressor, coolant temp gauge sender/ light switch, and injector harness. The part going to the throttle body, alternator, and AIR pump comes out of the secondary part of the harness on the passenger's side of the crank pulley.
