2.8 fuel sending unit
I just purchased an 88 Camaro with 2.8 v6 and automatic. Body and interior are in good shape plus it has 16x8 Iroc wheels with decent tires. I was planning an LS swap but my daughter decided she wanted the car as her first car. I'm a softy...
Now to my problem - (I did a search first but couldn't find an answer) The engine turns over easily but the seller said it needed a fuel pump. I dropped the tank and it had 3-4 inches of sludge in it... I'm having the tanked cleaned (and resealed if needed) but the sending unit is dead - it won't read the fuel level when I move the float. I went on-line and looked for a sending unit and all I find are ones for carb, TBI, TPI, and up to 86 2.8 v6 and 89 and after v6. What's so special about the 87-88 2.8 sending unit? The code on my harness is FEV.
I live 13 miles from HawksThirdGen and the girl I talked to said no one makes a sending unit for the 2.8 but they had a good used one. I asked if she knew the difference between the v6 and v8 and she said the v8 used a different pump. Well, I'm replacing the pump so why can't I use a v8 sending unit? They LOOK the same - is the harness wired different or something? Or are the lines a different size? It has 4 hard lines that appear to be bent just like the ones I've seen...
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
From the info I could find the codes on those units are for v8's. I went ahead and bought the Spectra FG20A from a vendor on ebay for $86.58 - they had a no questions asked 100% return guarantee policy. I feel confident it will work. I cross referenced part numbers for pumps and sending units and it appears they all use the same pieces. My biggest concern is if there is a difference in the connector or wiring. Once I get it all together I'll report back.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
I got my tank back Friday from the shop. My friend said it was pretty nasty. They cleaned it 3-4 times and resealed it for $100. Also, I got my new sending unit in the mail today. I matched it up to the original and everything looked the same. I plugged the harness in and moved the float and my daughter said the gas gauge worked so I installed the pump. I plugged it back in and rolled the window down, turned the key, and heard the pump cycle on and shut it off. So the pump works.,, Now I gotta install the tank and put some gas in and see if she fires.
Before I install the tank, I'm gonna get the air compressor from my dad and blow some air through the fuel lines and make sure there's no junk in the lines. Hopefully the rain holds off (the car's on jack stands in the driveway)

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
Finally got a break from the rain and got the tank installed last night. The v8 fuel sending unit assembly are working on the 2.8 but now I have ignition issues. It tries to run but it sounds like the timing is way off. I'm going to check plug wires today.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
I would up ordering a new distributor as it less expensive to buy one complete than all the parts to rebuild the original. I got it installed yesterday and now have a running Camaro.
To answer my original post - yes, the sending unit for a v8 will work on a v6. In my case I replace the sending unit and the pump. The 4 metal lines were the same size as the original and the was wired the same. I checked the fuel pressure (key on, engine off) and had 42 psi. The engine runs great and revs cleanly.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
I never did find a new sending unit listed for a FEV harness. I called hawksthirdgen and they said they had a good used one - if I recall it was @ $125. The one I bought off ebay appears to be wired the same as the FEV although it was listed for FPH, FEG, FES harnesses. BTW, I was told that the FEV harness was for a v6 car and was not made anymore - that's why I bought the one I did. I have not filled up my tank yet - only put a couple of gallons of gas in - but I did hook up the connector and moved the float and my daughter said the gauge moved. My car is a base model with a v6 and standard gauges.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
To be honest all sending units should be the same for all the v6's except for the carbed ones. my car is an 85 and I had no problem with the sending unit I got for it. For all the 85 sending units they are all the same even for the digital dash camaros.

Re: 2.8 fuel sending unit
Ok , thanks for the info . My mechanic got one from auto zone . They had 2 , 1 with code and 1 without . So he is going to just connect it . Last 1 , I put in looked like a match . But with fill up . Only half a tank on digital gauge . Wish me luck
