Re: new engine probem!

Check timing. We had that happen to us with an sbc- it wouldn't start for anyone. Then we rotated the dizzy 180 and boom - fired right up

Re: new engine probem!

As Alex said, check the distributor to make sure you don't have it 180 degrees off. That's easier to check than pulling the timing cover off. Also, make sure all your plug wires go from the correct spot on the cap to the right cylinder. Since it's popping out the intake, it does sound like you're 180 off, likely on the dizzy.

Re: new engine probem!

Not to sound like a jerk, but do you know how to set timing? You can't just drop the distributor in the engine. It has to point at a certain spot with the #1 cylinder on TDC compression stroke. If you are unfamiliar with it, do a search or check out some YouTube vids on setting distributor timing.

Re: new engine probem!

OK in your first post, you never stated the engine was running. All you said is you put the 3.4 together and then found out you had issues. We understood it as you were trying to start it for the first time and had this issue.
How was the car running before?
Was there any misfire, hesitation, bucking/jerking, stalling?
Did you put a new chain on before you put it all back together, or is this the original chain?

Re: new engine probem!

Original chain and it actually ran surprisingly well no jerking. Or backfire was actually pretty smooth

THe dizzy hold down can feel tight but sitll allow movement, had to really horse mine down to stop small ammount of movement that made it run great, then like crap.

Re: new engine probem!

Pull the cap, recheck your timing to make sure it hasn't moved too far off from Cyl 1 on TDC comp.

Take the plug out of the #1 cylinder. Put your thumb over the hole. Turn the engine over slowly with a breaker bar and socket on the harmonic balancer bolt. When you feel pressure pushing your finger away from the hole you are on the compression stroke.

Then look at the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. It should be close to top dead center (pointer pointing at the mark). Turn it the rest of the way to Top Dead Center.

Then find the number one plug on the distributor cap. Should be the wire to the plug you took out. Unsnap the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing towards #1. If it is pointing the opposite direction you are 180 out.

You can find all this in the Haynes manual for your car available at auto parts and book stores.

If that was bad, you wouldn't have spark. The cap and rotor are what deliver spark to the plugs. You are getting spark, but it sounds like at the wrong time.
