2.8 - 3.4 swap (KED85 please help)

who on here has swapped a 2.8l for a 3.4l? what is envloved and what exactly will i need for the swap besides the engine. my grandfather is goin to get a rebuilt long block for the car (it ended up being cheaper than to rebuild the engine i had). what intake setup should i use since the 83 has a carb? im getting mostly new accessories (new ac, alt, smog pump) and new distributer and coil. im basically goin to follow what KED85 did.

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...light=3.4+swap

my only concern with this is the carb and fi?

i could get a 350 alot cheaper since i have one sitting in my garage. the only reason im not doin a v8 swap is the cost invloved. i would have to replace everything! engine, accessories, smog equipment (from donor car), exhaust, radiator, tranny, rear end ( 3.08 ). it would be cheaper to buy a new car than to do that. thats what i origionally planned on doing. then i was goin to buy a used 2.8, but got screwed over on that, then i was goin to rebuild the 2.8 in the car. while checking on prices for machine work and parts, i got prices on long blocks (2.8 & 3.4). they were the same. since i have to replace most of the accessories (ac, smog & alt) everything else SHOULD bolt up, since there the same block (2.8 stroked = 3.1. 3.1 bored = 3.4) the only questions i really have on the swap is

1. can i use the intake manifold & 2bbl carb w/ 3.4 heads

2. timing

and the heads from a fi 2.8 DO NOT work with a carb. thats y i had to take back the used engine i got. the injectors injected into the heads. i need to know if this is true with the 3.4 heads.

SAY WHAT
First do a search on the 2.8 3.4 swap boogie.
https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/001462.html
READ THIS ALOT. Read it several times, then look at your current engine bay. That's what ya end up with. Fast RS saw my set up and couldn't believe it. He was a little dissapointed. I'm not. I press the gas pedal
I am splitting for back east until Jan 9th.
I'll be able to answer any questions after then.
As an FYI, I have 1985 MPFI (came from the blown 2.8 in my 1985 Firebird) heads on my 1985 S-10 Blazer with a carb. They were perfectly fine. Fit & operate perfect.
Leaks? Your instance makes no sense to me at all.
Not a put down, but, this is what I've done and it works great.
PS I'm an IDIOT when it comes to working on cars. That's why I like it simple.
I had a BMW2002. What a piece of **** garbage can.
Our F body cars are very basic.
Sorry about NOT BEING ABLE TO VIEW OLD POST
Do hope that's fixed real soon!

the engine i got was susposte to be from a 85 camaro w/ mpfi. i didnt get the fi with the engine cuz they broke the hell outta it when they took it out of the car. ive found as few other things that have led me to believe that the engine was not a 85 camaro 2.8l mpfi. there r a couple ppl in fresno that r goin to get really chewed now for this. well its good to know the heads will work with the manifold and carb from the 83 (sigh of relief). ill be spending the next few days now reading and re-reading the swap boogie and checking on exactly what i need for the swap. apparently its goin to be no more work than replacing the 2.8 with another 2.8. cept now ill have something a lil bigger with more torque . i should have the engine pulled and have the 3.4 ready to drop in by the time u (KED85) get back. hopefully itll be an easier swap for me than it was for u (since i got directions from when u did it). well time to read.

im not exactly sure whats goin on with my engine build rite now.. i still have the used 2.8, that im tring to sell. my grandpa wants to only use/buy a rebuilt engine. hes only wanting to buy a 2.8 and im not goin for that. any ideas?

it hasnt been that wendy here lately. u should take a drive up.. it would be a BIG help for the 3.4 swap to convince him to get a 3.4. fresno isnt that far for a drive, well for me its not.

Actually, I'll help ya this way.
Call 323-587-3144, ask for Marty & tell him Karl with a 1985 Firebird that go a 3.4 V-6 from ya told me to buy one from you, too!.
I paid $800 for my 40K motor.
He has PLENTY of them. He can deliver, also.
And, you said Fresno not that far away.......
When ya come pick it up, I may be available for a look see at my ride.
I just took FastRS for a ride in my swap job yesterday, we raced a 80's Camaro, probably close to 100MPH. Luckily, I didn't get caught!

loomdog,
READ MY THREAD and send me an email for any question!
Honest, you'll win!!
IF NOT, I'LL PAY FOR YOUR EMISSIONS DOWN HERE IN LA AREA!!
Call Marty and ask him.
He goes real low for high milage engines.
I paid for a low milage just broken in 3.4
I have atleast 100K HAPPY MOTORING MILES AHEAD OF ME without a rebuild.

ok.. i have read it many times and another one thats carbed based in a 82 firebird.

http://ken.lowrance.com/1982Firebird/1982_Firebird.htm

the 3.4 i was talking about is the gm performance parts engine. my grandfather (the person who is buying the engine) will only buy a rebuilt engine. if it was me and my money it wouldve already been done and i wouldve done exactly what u did. its been one giant nightmare for me cuz of that. im gonna try to sell some of my old stuff on ebay and get enough money that way to get the engine and avoid the nightmare im having now.

From AZ: rebuilt 2.8 w/core ~ $1500

New 3.4 from GM ~ 1700

is sure he wants a rebuild

did some calling around here, about 4 places have 3.4s, & the place w/ the 28K motor droped the price to $650. And i'm STILL waiting on my other W2

i can get a rebuilt 2.8 w/ core here for $800. the only way i would stay with a 2.8 is forged bottom end (perp for a sc or turbo) bored .30 over. crane cam above the 2030. full roller rockers. stiffer springs. ported and polished heads. ported intake. balanced and blueprinted.

i do have the option of dropping in a used 2.8 rite now. it would be a very temp solution. but it would be a solution.
