Multiport injection engine sputters and dies
Ok so I am in need of help from anybody that knows v6 fuel injected engines. I have been working on a 1986 firebird V6 with multiport fuel injection. I have replaced the following parts mostly in the engine and fuel areas:
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Fuel pump relay
Throttle position sensor
Spark plugs
Distributer cap
Rotor
External ignition coil
EGR
All vacuum hoses
MAF sensor
Alternator
Battery
These are all the things I have replaced hoping it would solve the issue but to no avail. The car starts, sputters, and then dies. When I try to start it again it will not start. Below is a video of what it sounds like. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome!

What was the fuel pressure when you checked it ? And how big and fat of a bright blue spark did you have when you checked it ?
I didn't see those two first basic troubleshooting steps mentioned so I figured we might as well get that out of the way , before loading up the ol parts cannon , again

Re: Multiport injection engine sputters and dies
the pressure care out to 40 psi on prime and when it does do its running cycle it cycles between 40-42 psi. So pressure is fine from pump to filter to I assume the injectors. So to me it seems to be narrowed down to possibly the injectors. As far as the blue spark haven’t tested that yet. Will test that tomorrow.

Ok , so you have fuel pressure , great . Does the pressure hold steady after you shut the key off or does it quickly bleed off ? If it holds steady , great , all is well , but if it doesn't hold pressure either the fuel pressure regulator or one (or more) of the injectors could be leaking . Don't forget when testing the spark to start it till it dies and then check it . Since you say it starts then dies and won't restart that's the condition you want it in when your checking the spark . Since you said you've already changed the ignition coil if your spark is weak it could be either the ICM , the pickup coil , or a lack of a good +12V to it ....
Re: Multiport injection engine sputters and dies
Should the fuel pressure slowly bleed off over time or remain? Having similar issues with my car still. I replaced my injectors with new ones from Southbay and a new FPR and noticed the pressure starts to slowly bleed off after I turn the key to briefly run the fuel pump.. I haven't timed it yet on how fast it bleeds. Car doesn't want to stay running for more than a few seconds after I changed injectors. Fuel is really old in tank so it could all be bad gas at this point and plan to drain whenever I get a free weekend. Just wasn't sure about how long fuel pressure should remain.

Before I start tearing out injectors I’m gonna try to replace the pickup coil just to eliminate the possibility of a spark issue. If that doesn’t work then I’ll start working around the injectors.

Ok so I tested the pick up coil and it turned out just fine. I pulled the injectors yesterday and tested them. Out of all 6 only one of them malfunctioned. I took a 9V battery to it and it wouldn’t click open and shut like the others would. So I should be getting the new one in this morning.

You should replace all the injectors not just 1.
The flow rate and they will not be matched.
contact southbay for a set of 16#hr.
what did the injectors ohm out at ?

As far as the ohms they all came to 12 ohms.

I’m not 100% sure but I think the coils should be 15-16.5 in ohm.
as far as the pointless caps you might have a different injector but the ones from southbay will be a direct replacement.

from what I’ve read they should read about 12 ohms which is what each one tested as.

Re: Multiport injection engine sputters and dies
Ok so I got the injectors put back together. I tried to start it and still no dice. I checked for spark from the cables and I get spark. It’s getting gas and it is getting air. It has compression too. So I wondering if my spark plugs are bad? Again? Like I said I get spark from the plug cables. Got zapped by one of them heh heh. So I gotta check and see if my spark plugs are getting spark.
