i idle at like 1500-2000 RPM
and i do 65 in 5th gear @ 3500 RPM

if any body has a 5 speed (with a stock rear) can they please post at what RPM they idle and at what RPM they do 65 MPH........

Is it a factory Tach or aftermarket.
If it is an aftermarket make sure the selector is on the right number of cylinders. 4,6,8

thanx guys but its a stock factory tach

i think maybe someone could have opened it, took the needle off and put it back on wrong.........?

hey hunter......next time you drive your camaro lemme know what RPM your at when you drive like 50, 55, 60 or 65 in 5th gear

for me:
50 is 2750
55 is 3000
60 is 3250
65 is 3500

this seems off...............does it seem off to anybody else?

Dude, that's WAY off. When you're going 65 is the motor SCREAMING or is it just cruising semi-noisy? You should be able to tell the difference between 2200rpm and 3500rpm.

My car is an auto but the gearing is similar if not the same......

50- ~1800 rpm in OD
60- 2000 rpm in OD
65- 2150 rpm in OD

75- 2500 rpm in OD
80- 2500 rpm in OD (wierd huh)

I have a 3.1L 5 speed. I idle at about the same that you do. The Hanyes manule says that it should idle at 550 - 650RPM. I can't remember the exact number it's been a while sence I looked. I have replaced vaccum lines and check and repaired many small things, but still have not been able to figure out why it idles higher then it should. It doesn't seem to bother the car so I will continue with a half harted search for the problem.

As for as the RPM's at 65MPH I can't remember. Next time I'm out I will check. mabye tomarrow night.

WHY or HOW did your tach start to read so far off is the question.
What happened?
Does it show idle at 500-700 range?

i turned on my car on today and idle on the tach was at 2000 RPM

i can tell the tach is screwed up just because of the way it climbs.........it doesnt climb smooth at all...........it'll bounce up to about 2000, then when i rev the engine, instead of advancing smoothly, it will "jump" up to where it is going

i think i saw something at work with which i think i can test the RPM's

it looks like a digital multi-meter but said something about RPM's on it

anyone hear of this or know how it works

btw thanx guys

also i need to put my new clutch and flywheel in soon,
what does the ring gear around the flywheel look like when you take it off?

i want to know, because i ordered what i thought was a manual trans flywheel

what i think i got was an auto trans FLEX PLATE

i called the store and they said what i actually got was the RING GEAR

so what i want to know is: IS THE RING GEAR ON A MANUAL TRANS FLYWHEEL THE SAME AS AN AUTO TRANS FLEXPLATE?

and yes, i would just have my flywheel cut, but for all intensive purposes I CANT

I would start searching for all leads to your tach.
You've got a simple loose wire somewhere.
Ring gear is same for clutch & auto, I'll bet.

ok, the prats store was wrong

i talked to my professor today and he told me that I DID INDEED GET A FLEXPLATE

its not a ring gear

i now need to find out how much a flywheel will cost

anyways for my tach..........it is obviously WAY off, and i need to figure out how to correct it...................

if i was to buy a nordskog digital gauge panel, would it have a V6 setting????????????????

cuz i want one, but if its only for V8's i wouldnt want one, cuz i wouldnt be able to use it

A new flywheel will run $200-300. Might want to try to find one in a junkyard.

Is there something wrong with the one you have now? It takes quite a bit to make a flywheel unusable. If its not too bad, resurfacing is pretty inexpensive and effective.

IF you are using a V-8 tach for V-6 application, there's your problem

You should be able to get a flywheel(For manual cars) for around 200. Mine is still stock right now, but I plan on having one built outta aluminum and have a steel plate for the clutch. The place I asked wanted 300 for it. Not bad.

The Tach does have an input sensor from the engine. Check that. You may be able to hook a timing light to your no 1 plug and one to the tack output lead from the coil and compare the 2. If they match who knows whats wrong(Probly the tack itself), but I bet if you get it done they'll be off.(mismatched flashing)

The Flashing from the spark plug will always be correct, the tach is always the reader of the info being fed to the spark plug, so if they are showing something different the tach, or the SIGNAL TO the tach is corrupted.

ok guys thanx

the main reason i couldnt get it resurfaced was cuz i am putting the clutch in at the dealer i work at

BUT

i aint paying $200 for a new one, so i will have to talk to my boss and see if i can leave the car over night

my tach is stock as far as i know
i just went out and adjusted it so the idle is correct

hopefully this will correct everything

thanx guys

oh yeah, how much of a performance would a aluminum flywheel offer?

i just got my dual friction clutch....................

Some. Its lighter and takes away alot of rotating mass. Meaning less power to turn the Flywheel(IS for manuals FLEXPLATE is AUTO) I had mine turned at a local machine shop and they had it done in under 30 minutes.
