Smog Pump Delete vs Performance

92 RS with 3.1L to 3.4L conversion and AC (w/3.4L larger injectors but the original 3.1L memcal or prom chip). Shortly I will be pulling my engine and while it is out, I am thinking about removing the smog pump. The pump injects into the cat converter so the O2 sensor is upstream of the injection point. Is it correct that I shouldn't see any error codes or loss of gas mileage by deleting the smog pump and plugging the tube on the cat?

My 89 2.8 has the smog pump deleted, and doesn't have any codes. I can't say whether it affected mileage, it was done before I bought it. I still get 20 mpg or so with mixed driving, though.

There is no real performance benefit to removing it...

Thanks. I was mostly concerned that it wouldn't lower the gas mileage or throw a code (particularly code 32) due to reduced back pressure in the exhaust since it won't be pumping air into the cat. Guess I will leave it out when I put the engine back in. Just have to find the right shorter belt.

I remove em on all my older vehicles. No codes just less restriction. They do stop up sometimes Ive had it happen. They do make newer ones that are high flow but Im not putting one back on.

nothing really gained or lost. I just like removing them for a cleaner engine bay and one less pulley to start screaming

Anybody have a correct AC Delco or Gates belt part number for Smog Delete but with A/C? With the correct belt, does anyone have the correct belt routing so that the pumps etc rotate in the correct direction? I have the big (2 inch thick) original 92 Camaro Service Manual but it does not show a belt routing without Smog but with A/C.

IMHO it is worth it to remove just to eliminate the noise especially if the pump is worn which is common. The air pump was an early attempt to cheaply control cold start emissions to get the cats heated up faster. It does much less under normal driving conditions yet still pumps away. Unless your car is driven daily with common cold start cycles, I think your conscious should be clear as far as damaging the earth if its removed. Your local authorities my not agree which means you probably may want to retain it.

Absolutely no guarantee on the belt length: K060915

Can do a rudimentary measurement with a piece of rope.

Routing:


The issue with this is the long stretch of belt between the alternator and crank pulley. With the A/C engaged it tends to whip, which causes noise and vibration. The '88 & '89 cars used an idler pulley setup to put tension on that stretch of belt. Recommended to be added. Different length belt(s) too.

I am now (after months due to car body repairs) ready to put the engine back in. This is my stock 3.1L V6. I have looked at all the threads about smog pump delete and find them confusing due to the fact that they don't talk about the 3.1L V6. All the pictures and part numbers offered refer to 5.0 or 5.7L but not the 3.1L. I know I can simply change the belts and routing but I want to leave the factory belt/belt routing and simply add an idler pulley (smog delete pulley) at the location of the old smog pump. It seems that is the cleanest for using factory original belt and belt routing. Does anybody have a part number/source for an idler/delete pulley that is a direct bolt-on fit on the 3.1L?

So, does anybody know if the smog delete pulley #10186167 which is listed for the 5.0L and 5.7L V8 engines work on the 3.1L V6?? I don't want to spend $60 and have it not fit on my 3.1L.....

I went to my favorite yard for used parts today since they have lots of thirdgen's. I found two 88 Camaros in the lot with V6 engines. Both of them had the idler pulley assembly in place of the smog pump. I had them pull one ($15) and brought it home. Test fitting tonight it looks like it should work ok directly in place of my smog pump and its brackets. I say the idler pulley assembly as it consists of the pulley wheel, a bracket and a brace. Here is the GM part number info for all three parts:

Idler Pulley Bracket GM 10065593
Idler Pulley Brace GM 10065594
Idler Pulley Wheel GM 10070108

The pulley wheel feels pretty smooth so I may soak it in oil for a while. I will probably use it and if it starts making noise then just get a new wheel ($50). Until I actually put everything back together I don't know if I will need a shorter belt as the pulley wheel is way smaller than the smog pump pulley wheel. I am dropping the brace and bracket off Friday at the powder coater along with several other parts for my 92 and my 67. Guessing it will be a couple of weeks before I can get the parts back and assemble them to the engine. Once I do that I will come back and post some pics.

You can carefully pop off the bearing seals and repack the bearing with axle grease. Oil won't last

I am not sure I can get the bearing apart without damage so the oil I was thinking of using to soak it would 90 gear oil.

Very small thin pick on the outter edge of the seal to race will pop it out. Do it all the time.

Also, you can buy a grease needle, which is literally just like a medical hypodermic needle for shots, but it goes onto your grease gun. You can carefully slip that needle between the inner race and seal, and pump grease into the bearing.

Either way works great.

Thanks, I didn't know that the seal was removable. I just did it and the bearing was dry. I cleaned the bearing with brake cleaner and then forced some wheel bearing grease into the bearing. Put the seal back on and I hope I got it seated enough to stay in. I pressed it down all the way around with a popsicle stick. It rotates smooth and more like a new bearing. Masked the bearing and just wire brushed the pulley around it. Cleaned it and shot it with some rustoleum primer followed by gloss black (both the "professional" rustoleum type of paint). I have the brackets for the pullley at the powder coater and they may be back ready to assemble by Wednesday or Friday. I do have to get the shorter belt used on the 88 engine.

End Result: I have assembled everything so here are the pictures. I haven't run the engine yet.

Idler Pulley and Bracket from an 88 Camaro V6
Belt is the one for the 88 Camaro V6 without smog pump (92.3 inches and fits perfectly)
Need to use a stud-bolt on the exhaust manifold to accommodate the rear bracket brace
