WHAT was this noise ?!?!?!?!?

I walked out this morning and started my car it started , chugged and coughed , and then died , cranked it again , same thing happened again .this happened about 3-4 times , then I cranked it and gave it the gas it it ran .Well I then cut it off .Well that is normal for it to that that once in awhle .But , For some reason , I dont know why , I've had alot on my mind lately , but this time I started it I didn't start it all the way i just turned it enough for the radio to come on .Well it started making a frying noise , like it was electricity or something .It wasn't steady it was like ssssss-sssssss-ssssss-sssss and it did that for like 10 secs until I tried to crank it .I tried to crank it and it wouldn't crank for about 3-4 seconds then it cranked and did find .....I then opened my hood up and the sensor on my oil sending unit was hanging off .I plugged it back in then looked at it , I jiggled it easy . I had to get another one put in today b/c one of the little clips were broke and it would not have stayed on .But I don't think that would have caused my car to make a frying noise like that huh ?!?!?!?! ..It was wierd .I was eating a pop tart at the time and I was thinking ''damn , wonder if I throw this thing on the hood if it would cook it ! But , it was like if I would have just left the key in the postion where the radio was on , it acted like it wanted to sssss-sssss-sssss-sssss for however long I left the key in the ignition like that ! ..It was wierd !

sounds like a loose wire somewhere, probably a ground from the battery

Theres something making a short to the body. The ssssss ing from the radio is either coming from a speaker(s) being hot grounded, bad attenea hook up or whatever was hot to the body created one hellofa EMF field that over ran the FM waves(Highly) doubtfull but a hellofa thought.

My car every once in a while does not want to start but its only every once in a while. Try once and it drags stop and try again and it turns right over. Its probly the selinoid going out in mine though.

Damn ! Hunter ! That was good ! You got it right to the T !!!! ...My vacuum hose behind the manifold is all cracked up and in real bad shape ! ...I need to change it .But did not know that it would make a noise like that ! ...It's wierd though , I was looking at my vacumn hoses today on my car , all of them are in good shape except the one behind the manifold .The metal one that runs behind the altenator is bent up from some mechanic .Shortly after I got the car some mechanic was too lazy to take the hose off to get the altenator on or off ...That was like 5 years ago ....But , I work on my own car now , well most of the work .When you guys help me find out whats wrong with it ! ...THANX as always guys ! Thanx Camaro hunter and I can't drive 55 !

Hunter , Or someone please educate me on what the purpose of vacumn hoses anyway ?....I've heard they can be a PITA to change , whats the best way to change the one behind the manifold ? ... It looks like it would be stubborn and not want to come off real easy .

I have 3 lines at the back of the manifold. Are you talking about the one that goes to the vaccum ball? If so it'll probolly take you 5 or 10 mins. Get under the car look at the ball and see ware the line goes . Pull the old one out and feed the new one in along the same path.

They just lead vacuum around to the parts that need it, like EGR (pre-90), brake booster, charcoal canister, PCV system, fuel pressure regulator, etc. Vacuum in your system changes as engine load changes (thus the reason for vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator, and the reason for the vacuum tank). Some vacuum lines (like the ones going to the top of the throttle body) are ported vacuum- meaning, depending on the position of the butterfly valve, the line will either have vacuum or not.

I'm not sure which line on yours is busted, but, if you check out my 2.8/2.8 swap page ( at http://www.geocities.com/tomp_3rdgen ) you can see how I used a large piece of heater hose to re-create the vacuum line between my friend's throttle body and his intake manifold. This is usually a plastic one, which also goes to the PCV valve. That short intake-manifold-to-PCV line on his car was also snapped, so I used a T-connector to make the split, and another length of vacuum hose to go to the PCV valve.

Vacuum hoses are used to operate different things in the car. Everything from our heater control to the brakes to cruise. On firebirds its used to operate the headlight motors even!.

On the carb'd version with vacuum advance the engine vacuum advances the timing with certain engine load. Brakes use to up the working pressure of the piston. Different sensors use engine vacuum to read and find out what they need to do at that vacuum rating.

get rubber hoses. You can get them in different diameters/lenths. replace like that last ALOT longer.

But yes auto parts stores should have them. The rubber type that is. The replacement plastic (rap is dealer only.

no the rubber ones that you kind have to fub on replacing last alot longer(heat does not qaffect theme plastic). You have to get the diameter's and the lengths togeather before going to the store.
