I need more power!!!

I have a 92bird with 3.1, 115,000 miles on it. What can I do to improve my acceleration and torque with out a lot of money. I just cant stand getting smoked by these ricers and 305's. On a side note , I notice a slight hesitation when I mash the gas, what the problem? I replaced the fuel filter, that helped a little, what could it be. Thanx

Hesitation is timing. Set it to 12-13 degrees.

Power issue. A few things. Headers, made by me. Available in less then a week. Cam. Many choices. Theres alot of stuff out there for the 60*V6.

Complete ignition system
FROM TIMING BELT & new water pump, to new plug wires, coil & rebuild distributor, COMPLETELY by removal, disassemble & rebuild with new electrics & internals.
THEN you will easily remove all hesitation.
AND make the engine last many miles more
AND regain LOST GAS MILAGE
AND REGAIN LOTS OF POWER.
Then add on the other stuff.
OR just go find a 3.4 & install!
Both are effort, but the timing & electrical stuff will set ya back about $150 & lots of physical effort.
Other 3.4 is lots of effort & INCREDIBLE INCREASE IN POWER in one complete mission for a very long enjoyable smile every mile! About $900

don't waste your money...

Trust me. The 2.8/3.1 is a great cruiser, but not a good racer.
Don't waste your money on it. Save your money and buy, at least, a Camaro with v-8 305cid. I'm saving up for a 1994/95 z28.
Camaro is way to heavy for v-6. (Hey, it is a fiero engine)

yea, re-doing the electrical system will easlity eliminate the hesitation. i was having a hesitation problem and it turned out one of my spark plug boots was touching the exhaust manifold. it was cracked enough where the spark was jumping out of the boot and to the manifold, so the cylinder wasn't firing all the time.

it could be something very very easy (i hope). prior to finding the faulty boot, i had already put in my MSD coil, Superconductier wires and replaced the alternator (it died) and fuel filter. With some help from the board i checked my fuel pressure and TPS sensor. All checked out good. Then the 'rents made me send it to the dealer and they replaced the O2 sensor, ingition module and cap and rotor. After all that I found out it was a boot *&$%&$. but my gas mileage jumped form 125 miles a tank to 225 miles a tank. Saving lots of $$$ in the long run. and its all stuff you can do in your driveway.

engine runs smooth, revs nice, and throttle response it great. but check all the stuff above. start easy and move on.

A few simple things that won't break the bank, but help:

Dynomax Cat Back 139.99
Catco High Flow Converter 59.99

Those two mods will give you a better sound, more performance and better gas mileage and are needed with how old our cars are.

Then look into Air box mods and K&N filters. Cheap and easy to do..

Keep it tuned up....

I never see it as a waste of money... :)

First mod you should do: The Major Tuneup. I just posted a message on this, find it by clicking here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=87334

It'll cost around $120, depending on the parts you choose (K&N filters over stock filters, MSD 8.5 wires over Accel wires over stock wires, etc). Plus it gets you acquainted really well with your car (thru buying the Haynes manual). You really shouldn't jump into putting aftermarket parts on (cam, exhaust) until you get your car running it's best. I know guys that followed my list, and were able to spin their rear tires after doing the work!!

Heres a pretty good list in order of what i did, made some decent power!

Full tune up
Msd Coil & Msd 6a
Lakewood control arms
1.6 rockers, cold air
5 speed swap

Then some other crap. I think the best bang for the buck right off will be some 3:73's with a posi, and exhaust.
