Am I insane for think this????

I was looking in my local Bargain Newspaper yesterday and i found some that started the juices flowing. I found a 1974 Pontiac 455 fresh rebuild, custo 62 castings, 12:1, isky mega cam, .485" lift, foller tip 1:52 rockers, street dominator intake, less than 1500 miles. for less then $750 so I'm think should i go ahead and see if i could drop this puppy in my 83 Firebird to create the ultimate Firebird sleeper?? I love my 2.8 but my dream is to drop a 400 or 455 in the car. What should I do? I need suggestions.

Thanks,
Robert

actually, it doesn't sound like a bad idea in the least bit....it will be a little bit of work though, (swaping motors, trans, raditors, etc.) which would be a tad simpliar if you had a 83 bird with a 305 in it....but that's not the case. If you think you're up for the swap, i'd say go for it, atleast you won't have to worry with a bunch of eletronics and whatnot, should make the job a little bit easier. goodluck with it thoug, and keep us posted.

Now do you know what would make it the ultimate sleeper. If you had Camaro with the orignal 2.8 L fuel injection sticker. Then some dude in his Mustang, or Camaro would pull up to you for the easy kill, then you would literally blow them away.

That would be funny.

do it!!! it has been done, ,check out the motor swaap board, i've been typing with some who want to do it. even thought about dropping the 400/400 from the bonnie into the bird, but the bonnie is still in 1 piece

455 swap boogie

get at lest a pumped up B-O-P 350 or stock TH400, beefed u 10 bolt or stock 12 bolt axle.

2 options for overdrive: gearvenders, or preped TH200-4R ( turbo T/A / gnx)

That would be cool stuff... just keep in mind emissions laws, though... the state might have a fit if you dump a '74 big block into your '83.

I believe in CT that if I register the car as a custom they will not have a problem, but then again you never know.

This is cool stuff. I'm getting my 455 and turbo 400 on saturday. I can't wait. I'm trading a guy my 326 for it. He must really want it. BTW, i have an 84 SE with 2.8 and T5. I'm a little scared of going from manual to auto though.

Take care,
Jon

You would have to get at least a Turbo 400 tranny to go with that. Or a sooped up 350 or something. Ill be in cincy next year. We should go drag racing sometime. I may do the swap this summer. If you do it before then, tell me how it goes. Like I said, a bit worried about auto in manual car, as my T5 would have NO chance at all. and the fact that it wouldn't be a good daily driver.

Take care.

Oh, also headers. That and wait in the front end. Braking too. Then the rear end. . . Does your car have Ttops? The 455 I'm getting has the ones with 6x heads. . .??? I know the intake is like 2.11 and ex is 1.61 but anything else?

I away thought putting a poncho engine is a pontiac car was awesome. Sorrry camaro guys *Yawn* Chevy *Yawn*

pontiac may have started and ruled most of the muscle car era, but what powerplant is in most gm muscle cars now?!? chevy.. oh well..

anyways.. i would defeintly go for it.. but, i only got one question.. how u gonna manage to have a big block sleeper? anyone that knows anything bout cars will know u got a bb by listening to it.. unless they think they know cars and think u have a supped up 305/350.. i know i would defiently never mistake v8 exhaust for a v6 or v6 exhaust for a v8..

big block f-body.. i like that.. it just sounds rite.. even if it is goin in a firechicken..

the 455 6X heads have 2.11 int 1.66 ex valves, and 101cc chambers. I you want to bump compression, get some 6X-4 heads, These have the 93-97cc chambers. check out the engine swap area, quit a few discussions on poncho powered firebirds :hail:

and as stated before, if my bonnie gets t-boned before I get the 3.4, I will drop in the 400/400 combo. (guess I'll get TX tags for it & say screw OH & their e-check)
