I constantly see people asking about how much further your wheels stick out with the 4th generation camaro rearend.
This is the best before picture I have. Its from my wedding. Only vehicle I have that I would let my buddies have fun decorating.

Here is what stock 16" 3rd gen wheels look like with the LT1 4th gen rearend. This rearend was pulled from a 94 Z28. I didnt measure, but its roughly 2" difference each side.

In a couple of weeks I'll post up pictures of my 02 WS6 wheels that I have for it. That should cover most questions people have about spacing.
Hope this helps some people.

Obviously you need an adjustable PHB. With a stock rear end, I bet yours was off too, just couldn't notice since both sides were in further. The passenger side is out, but your drivers side is tucked. Even with stock wheels & a stock rear end stock, mine was flush on the passenger side, yet tucked on the drivers side. And what tires do you have?
Here is another 3rd gen camaro with a 4th gen rear end, but with stock wheels. You can see that the drivers side is slightly in, like yours, but the passenger side is out.

The first pic is a before picture. It is with the 3rd gen rearend.

I'll get that this thursday. Didnt think about it at the time. I didnt think I had a before picture, then I remembered that one. I'll add that in. Plus a few more.
Only reason I really created this thread was because of people constantly asking about the differences. Figured this would be easy for them to search and people that have pics can add to it, just like you did. When money is right, Im going to invest in an adjustable PHB.

I post those same pics every time the question comes up, yet nobody ever bothers to search before asking. So I've posted those same pics well over a dozen times in the last couple of years. But it hasn't done anything to slow the questions from being asked.
So you had good intentions, but I 99.999% guarantee that by next week? Somebody will post up with a brand new thread asking.....

If you search "4th gen rear pics" this is the only thread that shows up that's an actual obvious hit. I suggest everyone start putting pics in this thread. I dotn see another 4th gen rear pics threads on the first page of the search.Originally Posted by Stephen

Yes, there are multiple ways to searching. But I never see people ask for pics of something. They ask for info & fit.
Just what I've seen in the many, many, many times I've posted those exact same pics.
EDIT: Stephen, Feel free to add any related information you would like. Im trying to help here by making this thread, I want people to add information, not complaints.
As Stephen did point out to me, I failed to mention that this is an LT1 rearend from a 94 Z28. I will add this to my first post.

Ive got a question. What type of Adjustable PHB should I get if im puttin an 02 SS rearend under my car?
Also Im thinking on puttin 295/50r16 on my stock rims with the new rearend. Im thinkin the new rearend and the new tires will make it stick out atleast 2" further then stock.

Since the 98-02 rears are a bit narrower than the 93-97 rears, stock 245/50s will line up with the fender lips, but still be under. With the way the 295/50s fit our stock 8" wheels, the sidewall will bulge some (kinda like a Pro Street tire does) & you'll have a bit sticking out past the fender, but not much worth worrying about.Originally Posted by 92z28camarokid

Well I left my camera so I didnt get any pics, but like most times Stephen was right. The driver's side wheel is almost flush with the body. There is between .5 to .75 inch difference from centerline. Definately going to be getting an adjustable phb. Will try to get pics next weekend of the difference. Then as I get things completed, I will add pics from the adjustable phb to when I swap in the 4th gen wheels.

This is the information I need. I'm going "shopping" at a salvage yard for a fourth gen rear end this weekend. I'll definitely make sure I grab one from a 1998 or newer car.Originally Posted by Stephen

how much narrower are the 98+? My brother is currently using my 98+ Moser Axles in his 93-97 rear end and they fit fine.Originally Posted by Stephen

The 93-97 4th gen rears are 3.8" wider from hub to hub. The 98+ rears are a bit shorter, at about 3.5 inches wide, but measurements are showing more like a 3.125 inch difference.Originally Posted by Zepher

Finally got around to installing my adjustable panhard. But suprisingly, it was centered with the stock bar.
here are some pics with the stock 3rd gen wheels.

Swapped to ws6 wheels now they look a lot better, no more sticking out.
Here is pics with the 4th gen wheels.

Looks offset to the drivers side to me, which is what I would expect to see.

Oh, I got you now, the last pic you are looking at are with the new wheels. Maybe I didnt mention that clear enough, sorry about that.

When I did mine, I made a plumb bob by putting a washer on a string & hung it over the fender, giving me a straight edge straight down to measure from the tire to the string. 7/8" in on both sides is what I ended up with.
EDIT:Makes sense now, with 1 being 3rd gen wheels &b the other 4th gen wheels.
edited my previous post, go back and look again. I think it makes more sense now. Your second pic is the one I posted with the new wheels I put on. 4th gen wheels.

What's a good price for an LS1 rear end?
If you already have a 9 bolt w/ 3.27s, is it worth swapping in an LS1 rear end with 3.42s? Because I hear that the 4th gen rear end is not stronger except with the LS1 rear end youre getting a torsen posi which I hear is good, plus you get LS1 rear brakes which is a bonus. But other than that is it worth swapping it in? And I already have an adjustable pan hard bar on order, so i'd be able to fix it if one wheel sticks out more than the other.
I'm just looking for ideas and I mean if it has LS1 brakes on it, I think it may be worth it. And would you use the LS1 driveshaft as well? I have an 700R4.

Not for sure. I paid $135 for mine, its from a 94, posi 3.23 and disk brakes. For a complete stock rear from an LS1, I personally wouldnt give more then $250. $200 shouldnt be hard to do.

3.27 to 3.42s will be hardly noticeable. I went from 3.42 to 3.73. I couldnt feel any difference while driving.

Not sure about the 9-bolts, but the 4th gen is just a 7 5/8 with 28 spline, same as many 3rd gens
youre getting a torsen posi which I hear is good,
torsen is pretty good for straight line, not as good in autocross situations. A lot of people prefer an Eaton. But the zexel is better then nothing and doesnt have any clutches to wear out like the auburn/eatons

just remember that with your current wheels, both wheels will stick out further then they do now

What brakes do you currently have? If you have drums, go for it. If you already have disk/posi, I wouldnt worry about it.Originally Posted by Stangski09

driveshafts are the same length (atleast for the auto I know)

Thanks for the answers. Nah I have discs man, I own a GTA w/ full discs. I'm just looking to do the LS1 swap on all 4's, and if I can get a rear end with the discs on them why not.. But if it's not stronger or anything then I may not even look into it.

Any pics of on a GTA with GTA wheels? The rear wheels on a GTA seem pretty tucked in when stock, and I'm looking at buying a 12bolt for a 4th gen to put in my GTA.

I dug up this thread needing an answer. Has anyone put an LS1 rearend in a firebird with crosslace wheels?
Would like to know whether or not I'm in for a chop and narrow.

16" crosslaces have the same backspacing as the 16" Camaro wheels, so they'll fit the same way & set at the same position.Originally Posted by White'89

By "a hair", you mean 2" to get the stock width, but I wouldn't take it that far in. Front crosslaces on a stock rear axle, look sweet setting out a little further that the stock rear wheels do, so I'd narrow it to match that or just a bit narrower. Maybe do the swap, then measure to see what you want & get it measured to that spec, not a random number suggested by anyone, including me.
That is what I did to fit my 11" rear wheels & am happier for doing it to MY specs, than using others suggestions. Almost wish I had gone 12"s though. Oh well.
Senior Member
Oh no, I'd be taking my own measurements trust me. And I know everyones measurements may differ by high mileage, or even having a rebuilt title like my car because you never know if its 100% straight or not.
But that's for another thread...
