Tire Rubbing Issue (Normal Tires?)

Hey guys,

I have a 1991 z28 (260,000km) that has been having many strange sound issues, as my last few post have been, well, here's another.

I run stock 1991 z28 16" rims with P215/60/R16 tires which I am aware are slightly taller than the stock 235/50/R16 but are also slightly thinner.

Which is why this issue is so strange. I recently had my wheel bearings repacked and brakes checked so neither of those are the issue. But when I drive in semi-tight circles (not even crazy tight) you can hear in the car a slight reeer reerre rreeeerr tire rubbing sound light rubber slowly rubbing along metal or something. This is confirmed by the smell of slightly burnt rubber that can be smelled when approaching the tires after driving. Upon asking tire shops, mechanics, and even "camaro enthusiasts" everyone says, "oh thats how these cars are, big tires, little car etc. dont worry about it" while I am left to think, If it was always this way, how did they sell so well for so many years with no one complaining? I am convinced this issue must be because of a slightly too tall tire, but I figured mine was too wide, however the stock tire is wider, which is very confusing.
I would like to know what you guys have to say in regards to this issue, because I have seen people run much larger tires and not complain of this audible rubbing noise.
Thanks,
-Bryce

Re: Tire Rubbing Issue (Normal Tires?)

Worn springs and struts causing lower ride height, as well as more body roll/lean as you turn in a circle, could also be worn sway bar bushings and end links to help make the prob worse and add to the body roll.

I run a 235/60-15 up front with V6 front springs and an alum head/intake gen 1 sbc V8 engine. Never had any tire rub like you are having.

Your tire is 26.2" x 8.46
Mine is 26.1" x 9.25"

That makes perfect sense! Turns out the sway bar links and bushings are a symptom of another one of my problems, and I have new struts and shocks to put in and I will replace the sway bar links and bushings too, thank you very much!

Re: Tire Rubbing Issue (Normal Tires?)

I have a question?
Last night i was driving my 82 berlinetta and i heard a loud pop fkllwed my a very faint grinding noise as if i were driving kn a rim and than became so faint i could barlet hear it inless i leaned out the window. so i automatically pulled over to check all belts and etc.all good.
But this morning i went to check barrings and breaks etc i noticed it is leaning on the passenger side more the back but seems the front as well.
Coukd this be maybe a shock?

So i had someone to stop and tow me back home

Re: Tire Rubbing Issue (Normal Tires?)

There is no vibrations on the stearing wheel.
No horrible noises like a barring.
There is a noise but faint.

Re: Tire Rubbing Issue (Normal Tires?)

This rubbing is either the tire rubbing the frame or plastic wheel liner, either will be evident if you pull the wheel off.

other possibility is the tires just hopping and dragging when hour turning slow and tightly because of the cars anti akerman geometry in the front end steering. It's a design issue from the factory and could be what you are hearing as well
