Speedo jumps around in 5th... and whirring noise out of gear.?
I did searches, but couldn't find anything helpful...
Non-WC T5 (out of an 83 I think .. if that matters) makes noise out of gear sitting, still, with the clutch engaged... or at least that's the only time is audible to me. Push the clutch in and it goes away. 3rd grinds very seldomly if I dont have the clutch 100% pushed in. It's got the death whine too, but my Camaro has the same problem and it doesnt have the death whine... so I doubt that has to do with it.
Also... the speedometer (VSS) is accurate and doesn't jump around randomly in any gear except 5th gear. When it does, it's only when I give it a blip of the throttle. As soon as I just cruise it's accurate and consistant again. 1st-4th I can give it up to 1/2 throttle.... jump the throttle in gear...and it doesnt fluctuate. Reason I say half is that the car (the GTA) has half throttle. Long story on that, don't ask.
My Camaro actually has the same problem described first, but it's a world class (junkyard T5, Im almost positive I got it out of an 89 Firebird). Clutch engaged it whirrs out of gear. Doesn't grind or make noise otherwise.
I'm figuring it's a bearing in the front of the transmission, but just wondering what it's called/PN (if that's even the problem) and how hard it is to change. The Camaro is down for a lot of work and I'd like to fix it while it's down.
Any ideas/input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

-Bud

Played with it some more... and the speedometer jumps around a good 5-6 mph when I give the car gas at all in 5th gear. It's almost like the speedo is slipping?....
No other gears do that.
Any ideas at all?

both cars got new clutch/pressure plate/etc deals from the local parts store .. throwout bearing included. Stock replacement stuff. Shouldn't be that unless the stock replacement throwout bearings from the parts store (autozone I think) are junk.
Just seems like it has to be at least a fairly common problem since both of my 5 speed cars do it. I dunno though, not many replies... Thanks for the reply.

My speedo did that for years on end before I finally got sick of it. It finally got to the point where it would stop working altogether if I gave it gas in 5th. Made using the cruise control interesting.
It needs a new "sleeve", the piece the speedo gear sits in. The OE one is somekind of chinesium, and I think it dissolves in gear lube; replacement ones are steel, altogether a better part.

Yeah they make alot of car parts out of that stuff these days..... the cheapest metal that just barely won't dissolve in gasoline or coolant or oil or whatever.
They do come with the O-ring. At least, they usually do when I buy them.

Awesome. Thanks RB83L69.
I will definitely look into replacing that when it's the GTA's turn for a makeover (after my Camaro is done... which will be a few more weeks heh).
Anyone have any ideas about the whirring noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in?

That's the part that kinda sucks b/c I can't compare.... both cars are used T5 swaps. The GTA's is from Ebay and the Camaro's is from the junkyard. The GTA swap is fairly recent, but teh Camaro has had the T5 in it for awhile and I don't remember it ever not making the noise...

Back to life. Is the sleeve mentioned above GM part number 345215?
