How much power can the 700R4 handle? Around 400 or so? I am thinking about a Pro-Charger with a 6-8 boost. Right now I am putting out 307 at the crank. The supercharger should bring me over 400. Will I need a new Tranny?

If it's your original transmission then I wouldn't expect too much out of it. It might last for a season or so.

Its only as strong as you build it.

A stock 700R4 behind a stock 305 bites the dust fairly fast. But a good built trans will take 400HP easily.

I would reccomend you either building up the trans you have or getting a new unit built to handle your power range, Your not going to go too far with a stock trans behind a blown engine.

I am going through the same thing. plus i have been told that a t5 wont cut it if i wanted to go stick shift. is the m6 the same as the t56? what should we do to our 700r4s though. ive got a 350 horse motor and 3.73 gears. i have a shift kit here but it isnt installed yet. what else should i get? stall converter? what size, and what else? would it be more worth it to just buy a t56 instead?

The 700r4 that I have is suposed to handle 600-650 HP. Had it built locally. Just like the other guy said, there only as strong as you build them...

In the end it will probably cost you about the same amount to build equally strong 700R4 and T5's, So really its up to you. Do you like the fun of a stick shift or the consistency of an auto?

Personally im looking into junking my th-350 and going to a built up 700R4. As much as i would love a manual i would rather get more consitency in my shifts.

So...

If they say it will handle xxxHP hold them to it, and if your under that and it blows take it back to them for warranty.

I've had my stock (shiftkit) 90,000 Mile 700R4 behind my 383 for 2 seasons now, runs 12's and still chirps the tires. I'm hopeing I can go another 2 seasons lol

I built a 700 for Brutalforms 92 Formula last winter. With a horrible tune it made just under 500 hp and just under 600 ft lbs of torque. Nothing inside the trans is tricked out. Minor upgrades and blueprinted unit. Even with 1.6 60' times, it held up well all season. It is our rolling R&D test rans. I am pretty sure it has picked up a minimum of 50 hp and 50 ft lbs since the tune. When we break it, we will post the what's and why's. We actually hope to break it to find the weak links. At least I hope so, I am sure Tom does not . The key to durability, imho, is attention to detail and blueprinting. This takes time, and therefore, cost's money.

should i put the shift kit in myself, or have a shop do it. how much should it cost? will it help the amount of power it can handle?

B&M kits are easier than transgo to install.

o, i got the B&M. but i dont think ive done anything mechanical yet. ive done plenty of body work and painting, a little bit of electronics. but nothing really mechanical yet.

B&M kits contain excellent instructions. Follow them to the letter and you will be fine. Dive in.

I want to install a 6-speed,but I dont want to slow the car down. GM says the 700R4 is the perfect mate for the 350 engine.

how much power can a t5 handle? people say it will not go good with my 350 horse motor. but ive seen 383's with t5s. what if i got a built t5? i dont drive the car hard at all. tell me breaking stories to dissuade me.
