Parking Brake
Hi,
I recently picked up an 85 Iroc and the parking brake does not work. I have discs on the rear. What is the proper way to attempt adjusting the park?

If you go under your car and look up in the tunnel where the exhaust/driveshaft/torque arm go you should be able to see the cables and the adjustment mechanism for the parking brake. This is about as far back as the back edge of the doors if you are looking at the car from the side. Slide under it there, and you should be able to see a sort of nut and threaded rod attached to the parking brake cables. I dont' remember which way to turn it, but grab a couple wrenches, reach up there, and try tightening the threaded rod while holding the nut. That should fix your problem. Let me know if you don't understand what I'm talking about. Good luck. It's kind of hard to reach. Actually, reaching it is ok, but getting room to turn the wrenches is tough.

Since its the first generation of rear discs, you might be in for a battle. If its not a simple cable problem, it might be the caliper itself. That style was prone to crap out. There is a fix kit available, but it might be easier to just buy reman calipers (big $$)
Good luck, i hope its just the cables.

I have an 85 too. If I remember correctly there is a free fix from GM (for manual trannies only). At any rate once the brake works, use the e-brake often and you shouldn't have any difficulties--at least I haven't and the fix was effect a couple of years ago.

Well I finally got a chance last nite to get under the car and adjust the parking brake. I did this successfully, however.
test 1: While up on stands, I started the car and put it into gear. Put my foot on the brake and engaged the ebrake, and released the foot brakes and the wheels spun as fast as if the brake was not engaged.
test 2: I disengaged the e-brake and held my foot on the regular brake while putting the car in gear. While I was on the foot brake with the car in gear, I noticed that the rear wheels never actually stopped, they slowed down but were still spinning.
Either way you put it, the ebrake is not holding the car and my rear brakes are for ****.
Any recomendations where to go from here with the rear brakes?
Calipers, Rotors Pads?
Thanks,

My other Formula has this problem. It's new caliper time for both of us. I can not believe that ther is not a factory recall on this defect. I should be able to take the car to a dealer and get if fixed free.
A buddy of mine has an 85 ZX and he got new injectors because of a recall despite the fact the car was over 15 years old.
