Cut the crap - start helping each other
I've been a member of thirdgen.org for the past three years or so; ever since I owned my car. I have learned a tremendous amount of information from this board. Back when I purchased my car and joined the boards, I did not even know how to change my own oil. Last weekend I put headers on a member's car for him. I owe all my knowledge to you guys and a couple other boards on the internet. However, I am thinking of leaving thirdge.org because most of the threads turn into arguments, and nobody is helping out the new members.
If there is a new member on the board and he asks a question like, "Hey, I can get some 4th gen seats from my bud, will they fit?" Instead of getting a reply of "yes they will fit" and being helped, they get a response such as "why don't you try a search you *&#@%* idiot!!" The second reply is way to common and the new guys are not being helped. I think that we should help out the new guys and answer their questions because they would not have posted it if they knew the answer OR how to find it. So now people have to defend themselves before they put up a post with "I tried a search and found nothing." I think that is BS because nobody should have to say that. I know why the search function is there, but the new guys don't always know about it. So stop harrassing the new guys and teach them, don't yell at them for not knowing what to do.
My other problem is that everyone loves to argue and I can't figure out why. Recently, the moderaters have really helped cut down on the flaming and useless posts, but there is way too much arguing on the boards. If you disagree with something fine, just don't drag the entire thread into an argument. All too often I will only read half a thread because it is just one giant argument between two people. If that's the case, just use PM's, that's what they are there for.
I think people need to grow up on the boards and start helping out each other instead of arguing or making a completly useless reply.
I'm done,
Jesse

I completely agree. The site has been getting better at usless posts, but now everyone just rapes the new guys when they post something that has alreay been covered. All of us have been a new gut at one time or another. I am sure that all of you, including me, have posted a topic that has already been covered, or you don't do a search before hand. Many of the new guys are unaware of the search function.
I used to tell newbies to do a search, and i didnt even give them the answer to the question that they originally asked. I was being ignorant not realizing that they are a newbie with a love for thirdgens and want ways to improve their's. I have now come to realize that there is no need to post that, so now when i see a post that has been answered a few million times, i respond with an answer that may help them, and also recommend using the search feature next time.
I agree with oldbluez when he says that this site is becoming nothing but arguments and flaming with some useful info here and there. This site is by far the best site for thirdgen info, but the replies are becoming ***** replies, flaming, and arguments.
I just hate to see such a great site turn into all of the lovers of the same car to turn on each other.

Very well said guys. I have been on and off this board for several years now. I don't post here much because of people ripping new guys for asking questions. I read one today. I have thousands of post on other boards and will not post if people are rude. Just my .02

well said OldBlue. I agree completely. If you can answer someone's question then do it. If it has been answered already, guide him to the previous post and inform them the sight is equipped with a search engine for future reference without ripping someone a new azz. I don't see why people get so irritated over a simple question?

Well said.
Sure, the same simple questions over and over do get old. I do see the same people saying the same "Search, you @#!#*$ idiot" over and over.
Some people like to help out a newbie and answer a question for them. I do not mind it myself. It is a big turnoff to new people to this board when that poor attitude is shown.
One thing I am glad, is the warning about the "IBTL" crap. That is such a waste of bandwidth and does nothing but to pad a post count. It is not the quantity- it the QUALITY of your posts. That means Mark Shields is down to 192 posts per day from his usual 266.
Let's all get along.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING NICE, CONSTRUCTIVE OR HELPFUL TO POST, THEN DO NOT POST IT!

Everyone else, thanks for the support, I just wanted to let others know how I feel about the way the board is.

I agree too...I've posted some things in the past when I was a newer member.....and people responded....but....it was like I was bothering them.....and all I needed was a little help...or an opinion....etc....but..now that I've been here for awhile...it's better...but there are still some bad apples out there....oh well I guess...

I agree too,
I try to help out new people, and I will usually tell someone to do a search on the subject. But what I do is seach it and give them a good link to what they are looking for aswell. Some people get all weird when they are on the net or something cause I know some reall nice people in real life, but when they are on the net they are some of the worst people in the world
I dont rag on someone unless they really deserve it, like the dude that wanted to put pickup stacks on his car. Other than that I usually say my opoinion on the subject and tell them if it looks good or not. Even if I like it or despise it.
This great site will never grow unless everyone is helpful and respective of each other.

Its funny how things come full circle. I said the same thing a few months back. If you have nothing constructive to say dont say it at all. There is no such thing as constrictive critisism. Critisizm is always negative. On a forum like this one person starts with the flaming and then another has to add his or hers. I too, do not like to be cutdown in a forum of thousands of others. Its degrading and mean and no person should have to put up with it. I have thought of not using the boards for questions of fera of ridicule. On the the other hand I will not be forced out by someones arrogance.
I think the moderators do a great job on the technical aspect. That man above knows I could not have done the things to my car and engine without the likes of Vader, Ede, RB83l69 and f-bird88 and many others. As I have said many times before, I appreciate all the help I have received from this board.
More can be done here though. When I was the new kid on the block here back in June, I quickly learned from many of the conversations on this board, who to refer to and who not to. This was in an effort to avoid the pissing contest on the boards. It all boils down to respect. Respect begins with ones self. If you dont mind being called a dumass does that make you a dumass? No, but it might indicate how you feel about yourself. If you dont like being called a dumass, why would you call some one else such degrading names.
I come here to learn and to avoid the same mistakes that others have made. We al;l have unique experiences and something to contribute. No matter how insignificant you may think someones contribution maybe, it may have just answered some one elses dilema. When in the Army we used to tell the junior enlisted there is no such thing as a stupid question. This could be a philosophy we all could keep in mind.

Well said guys. I have been into racing and building cars longer than some of you have been around. I try and help however I can. I have worked on peoples car for free to try and help. This is after working 60 hour at the dealership service dept. I have given away parts I could have sold because I knew the person needed them and could not afford them. As long as you have a love for the sport and are nice I will do what I can to help. This is a very good site for information. If we run the new people away were do you think they will go? I know I don't want someone to say I purchased a car from another country because they were treated bad here.
I read on a site from Icon the other night about 3rd gen Fbody owners. It was not nice at all. It was very mean and there has to be a reason the person wrote it.
I would never buy anything from these people now. I think they are no long around anyway. I think you see what I mean about reading something and not wanting to deal with them then.

I think you see what I mean about reading something and not wanting to deal with them then. some people are mean, flame, or rude just because it's fun for them to do and no one can give them a bloody nose on the net. i think that anyone who has been here for a while or posted much can't say they've never posted something they shouldn't have. i know i have, but partly it's because it's funny, or to me it is. after a while you get tired of seeing people ask questions without doing any research or trouble shooting. like "why won't my car start" with no other or very few details. as the thirdgen f bodys age you get a new group asking the same questions as before, and some very basic questions. not long ago someone said they bought a camaro that they knew was a "fixer upper" and then said they knew nothing about cars. that's just asking for a smart *** comment or two. i'm willing to bet i read as much or more threads than anyone here, having 3 boards to watch, plus a few others i like to read, so i see a lot of great information passed along as well as great amounts of stupidity, my own included sometimes. like way back when i first started fooling with cars and SBCs i learned the firing order backwards, everytime i post something about it i have to be careful i get it right, even wrote it and my puter case to keep me straight. it also amazes me at time that people think i actually know something, maybe i do, maybe i don't, i guess i get by. i know i love being in my garage and here as well.

i have a confession to make
i was an ******* who didnt know **** about the technical aspect of cars when i first joined this board (go look at some of my old posts and you'll see how big of a bone head i really was........took me 4 hours to change a thermostat....lol) but after 2 years of mechanic's school, investing in a nice set of tools, and taking the advice of the great folks here, i'm now rebuilding engines and transmissions and making a great living do it (ok, well C-techs dont rebuild engines at work, but i do at home
)
so people can change, i did
if you want proof, go look at how dumb some of my old questions were (and how much of an ******* i was to some people)

I agree with this to some extent. Yep, I'm stirring the pot here.
I recently posted a reply to something like "How to rebuild my front suspension" or something along that line. Just to look, I did a search on "Suspension Rebuild" and I got 155 threads. I simply C&P a lot of them as my reply.
What DOES chap my bag is the guys that post "I didn't do a search yet but here's my question: (insert Q here)"
That's BS.. I've done a LOT of replying on this and other subjects and I don't feel the need to spend my day typing it all over again. I really enjoy this board, learning what I can, and helping people out but I do reach a limit every now and then. I have been a bit rude lately and I'll do my best to curb my attitude.
Ed, I'm done now...

the main problem is people probably dont come to this forum and read post like this and then realize mistakes...some people will just stay in the apperance and detailing and trash talk members cars....and someone said above we all have made post we shouldnt have...i couldnt agree more, but understanding that we made post we shouldnt have is very important, some dont realize they shouldnt have made those post

a lot of times, people ask questions that you may have asked one time, and now you know the answer. that's what sharing information is all about. now you can pass the torch on to them because somebody else helped you. you could always put a link to a thread that you got your question answered in.
i love the search, and i use it a lot. but when i first came here, i had no idea it existed. i think the first question i posted is "how do you port a plenum?"

Back when I purchased my car and joined the boards, I did not even know how to change my own oil. Last weekend I put headers on a member's car for him. I owe all my knowledge to you guys and a couple other boards on the internet. However, I am thinking of leaving thirdge.org because most of the threads turn into arguments, and nobody is helping out the new members......

I think Big Al was being sarcastic
I think this thread should be a mandatory read...I personally have never posted a question that would warrant being told to search (if I have a REALLY dumb question, I just go to my local F-Body club's website, where I know everyone personally).
Every time I try a search though, I end up with pages and pages of useless crap, where there might be one thread that I need buried beneath the haystack of, well, crap.

Wow, I go away for a couple days and this thread exploded.
I haven't been able to check and see if this thread has made any impact on the board itself in the threads. If it has, post and let us know. I've been really busy lately and won't get to check it out myself for a couple more days.
....gotta keep the thread alive.

No changes, sorry. You can't change the way people are. Like someone said, it's human nature to be impatient and argumentative. The 500 hits this thread has gotten are likely only between 100 and 200 people.

I try to help out as much as I can. I too had 0 automotove mechanical ability when I bought my 3rd gen and joined this site 3 years ago.
With the help of the members here, I was able to go from a Quadrajet to an Edelbrock Performer RPM setup, to a TPI setup, and now I am working on 2 LT1 swaps, mine and my friends.
I could have saved that first $1700 in tiny repairs that I had done to my car right after I bought it, if I would have found this site little bit sooner.

Well, i can comment on this topic as im a user/poster/moderator here like almost everyone else :-P
People do repeatedly ask the same question over and over and over . it does get old, if i dont know i will tell them to search, or if i know i say what i do know to help them out and/or give them some search topics.
OUtright flaming and post whoring here does get quite lame, i mean serious point the people who flame the most i promise u would not if 6'6 240# of me was staring them in the face lol
Post whoring is funny and kind of amusing but does ultimately get old, but if thats your thing i would rather see a post ***** than a flamer...
I help out all the local thirdgen crew from the nw in/south chicago board and answer any questions that they have or stuff they are thinking about doing and i try to not be judgemental even if i will admit im opinionated(they will say yes lol)
I think everyone should do a quick search to see if they can find an answer before they post, its not like thirdgen has the worlds only thirdgen related search engine, almost all boards have search indexes now, it would simplify a lot of things.. u guys want bad things about do a search start posting on the diy prom board.
tons of stuff hidden there if u take the time to search. and then if its not answered there u can post a comprehensive question to the guys there and they will help u no problem but check the basics first. its a requirement there and they will help u if u cant find the answer and a few of those guys are about prom gods.
Common sense needs to come back to alot of posters here, both old and new, sometimes funny is ok and eveyrone needs a laugh but remember what happened last time things got out of hand
rant mode off :-)
