Repairing the spoiler on an 89 Firebird Formula

Hey guys, I was wondering what it would take to repair the spoiler on an 89 Firebird Formula. It looks like it has a vynal (sp?) cover to it and it has a small hole in it, and a nice crack in the inside side on thee passenger side (erm....did you get that?)

Anyway, the question is, how can I repair this? Are the spoilers made out of fiberglass?

Thanks for the help

Urithane anchor material is what our spoilers are made of... There is virtually nothing you can do, and anything you can do will not last. You will be better off buying a fiberglass spoiler from Hawks, call Bruce, he is cool.

Sorry for the bad news

Oh ok, well, what ever works I guess, too bad they cost $350 on sale...

Would the spoiler off a Z28 work on the Firebird? One such as..
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...il?v=1&pid=227 I always liked the look of that one spoiler, but I don't know if it would fit/work at all.

What do you think? Thanks again

Mine cracked also. I would imagine everybody's is cracked whether they can see it or not. Mine you could see on the passenger side and when I replaced it with the fiberglass spoiler, the driver's side was cracked also.

The fiberglass one is a real nice piece. Smooth, not wavy like the stocker. And your hatch will rise by itselft when you hit the button Its incredibly light compared to the original.

Yea, no doubt. Sounds like I'll be doing that anyway

Will the spoiler off the Z28 that I posted earlier fit?
But yea, I spose it would be better to keep it all original eh?

You can fix them, but it's a pain. Napa sells a two part compound that mixes like epoxy, but is flexable when dry. I used this stuff with good results on the endura nose on my '72 GTO and the rubber on the honeycomb wheels. It flexes with the material it's bonded to so it won't crack after it's painted. It's like sanding a tire when it's dry,but it'll last longer than the spoiler. Chris

That's the other nice thing about the fiberglass spoiler is the weight, i am shooting for 28-2900 LBS for my formula for autocrossing.
To answer your question, you could get the decklid and spoiler or entire rear hatch for a 91-92 Z28 and swap it onto yours. i had thought about doing that, but after i decided to get the ram air hood, i thought the stock spoiler flowed with it better.

I have been fortunate, my first Formula the spoiler still looks pretty good, there is a little buldge on the drivers side about half way back on the speer, but there is no splits... HOWEVER, I did get a fiberglass spoiler for BOTH of my Formulas from Hawk, definately worth it IMO.

I am going to put my 2nd Formula back to all original, so I am going to hang onto that overweight POS anyway.

I've got a fiberglass spoiler on my red GTA that I got from GT Auto, and I highly recommend one from any reputable vendor.

The quality is fantastic, and the fact that it is a fix-it and forget-it repair is also a big plus.... It's too bad they didn't come that way originally.

Although I think Japan might be a stretch for a drive. IF you live in the North America and are willing to make a trip, I know Hawk usually goes to the T/A nats in Dayton. You can usually pick one up there, he sometimes puts them on sale, & you will not need to pay shipping.

Call Hawk and see what he will do for you.

Yes but, not as a 'bolt on and go' if that's what you are looking for... https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=245200

So I noticed.. I think I will just stick with the factory style spoiler. Looks good on the Firebird anyway
