Here's my conservative sub set-up w/pics (kinda long)

When I started out on a mission to beef up my sound system I gave myself one goal, use as little of your trunk area as possible. I have seen numerous f-bodys cruzin around with enough of a sub box in the back to take up the whole hatch, this is impressive but not what I wanted. I wasn't too worried about rattling the windows in neihborring cars, just my own.

I started out with your satndard Alpine deck and 3 way Pioneer speakers all the way around; for high and mid range response. Now it was time for some low frequency responce. With my goal in mind, I decided to get a powerful sub that was designed for the smallest box I could find. A trip to the local car audiio store found me a 10" Olympian Warrior sub, which is designed to work with either a 1 cubic foot sealed box or with a larger bandpass style box, this feature is the key to my end product. Obviously I chose the smaller sealed box and went on my way. Now, I originally had this sub sitting directly behind the rear seats, where you'd comonly find a box in a f-body. This sounded good and didn't take up too much space, so I was happy.

Now this is where the story gets interesting. One day, me and a few buds were on a road trip when we decided to take the t-tops off. Because of a lack of space for the t-tops I was forced to put the sub in my locking rear storrage area, this is key. To my supprise, putting the sub in here improved its sound and intensity incredibly. Here is why: putting my small sealed box in this compartment literally turned the whole rear compartment into a bandpass style box, which takes greater advantage of my sub designs characteristics, while actually creating more space.

I highly recomend this style set-up to anyone who wants an incredible sound system, but isn't willing to give up their whole rear hatch area becasue of it. This system sounds equally well for rap and rock, I personally like to blair both. Like I said in the begining, this stereo is only impresive if your in the car. With how I have it set up I can have it cranked-up with the windows down and not get any looks from the fuzz while I am cruzin at the local strip. If you want to draw attention to yourself, or win competitions this is not for you. There are many differnt approaches to this that will work, but you need two key items for this effect: a locking rear compartment and a sealed box. Here are some pics for anyone that is interested.

Enjoy

Here is a better angle that lets you see the small sealed box and how it's positioned. Notice I have my amps in there also, one is bridged for the sub and one is for the other four speakers.

Here's the real reason it worked better.

Not saying that what you thought wasn't right, but this theory holds more water, or bass.

BTW, this website is cool as hell. Make sure you check out the wet tee shirt competition.

Nice web site. Did you pass the Installer Quiz? I have one question. What purpose do the 6x9's in the back serve? Do you still have the stock speakers location filled too or did you just relocate them?

Looks good,
Matt

Well if you read it all, then you'd understand that the distance of the woofer from the rear wall makes the diff.

If you had it just behind the rear seats, then the sound had to travel ~2-3ft. before it reflected off the back of the car. Well if you go into his chart that he has about wavelengths, then you'll see that distance is what they call 1/4 outta phase with the soundwaves traveling from the sub itself. And that's a bad thing.

By putting it closer to the rear of the car, those distances are much less outta phase.

The wet t's are under "I love Car Audio", and you wanna check out the link labeled "Flash". It's neat also.

My car has never had 6x9's behind the sail pannels, that's what you mean by stock location right? I think it was due to the fact that it came with that rear storage compartment, which had square speakers in it originally. The holes were enlarged and the 6x9's were added by the previous owner, one day I am gonna need to find another one of those covers that hasen't been all hacked up.

not to rag on your install but you should try and clean it up in there so it looks a little more presentable.

Yeah, yeah, I hear ya; sounds like something my mom would say. (JK) It is kinda messy, but I'm not worried about it, I don't really open that compartment up ever; unless I am tweaking my cross-over or something. I think it looks nice and indiscrete when closed, and that's what I am going for. I don't want someone to go for a 5 finger discount window shopping extravaganza some night.
