Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

I have a shifter out of a later third gen and it is way different from the one in my 83 Trans Am. I know that 82's got the 200-4r trans or something like that, so I may need an 83-specific 700r4 Shifter from a Trans Am.

It may be a long-shot, but maybe someone has one for sale.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

I just saw one in a 83Trans Am today at the JY.Is it worth $20 to you if I go back and get it? May be able to in a few days, but not sure what they would want for it. Just checking?

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

they are different 89 is no where near same as 82 83 ones

bolts up differently on the floor pan the shape and pattern of mouting bolts are different and the brackets for cables are different too

noobs need to stop confusing ppl and realize that early third gen parts are not same as later years stuff especially console and shifters and dashes and much more

the trans was a TH200C 3 speed auto its like a 6" tail th350 except it has 11 bolt pan instead of 13 like the th350 had and was in 82 and 83

i have a shifter out of an 83 if i didnt scrap it yet i can check but it may already be in the shredder since last week when i took a load in

i was trying ot get rid of it for a couple years but no one ever wanted it

pm or email me

It would have to work perfectly, meaning that the button to actually move the shifter is functioning, as well as the hook that grabs the bottom of the shifter to prevent it from moving with the key off.

Randy-
And yes, early third gens (especially T/A's) are my passion, so I know alot of differences in them as opposed to later models. The shifter I am looking for has the front two mounting points farther apart and mounted differently. Also the front two mounting points have studs sticking up from the floor, as opposed to threaded bosses. The shift cable is the same style, but the lockout cable is rounded, rather than squared off like the rest. The top of the rod that the handle mounts to is 90* off to the side, and require's a specific handle to be mounted to it.

Anyway, if you have one I would love to get a pic of it and does it work the way it should? I also need a cruise control transducer in working order if you happen to have one of those as well.

Also, when would you be back at the yard? I wouldn't want to buy one and then you get one and then I would be obligated to buy it as well, lol.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Maybe tomorrow, but I'll check with you first, and only if all conditions you mentioned apply. Interior was real clean, I only stopped to look because someone on here was looking for an early hatch release and this had it as well as the dash mounted defrost buttons, but now I can't even find that earlier post. Oh well, I'll check back, don't want to stick you with anything. Sometimes I think I do way to much "research" at the JY, LOL.

Nothing wrong with researching at the JY, lol. If you go tomorrow, and the shifter is the correct style and works the way it should, go ahead and grab it. This is really the only lead on one that I have, but it has to be an 83 and a 700r4 trans.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Hi again, hate to sound dumb, but I've got a 5sp and not real familiar with automatics. Isn't the easiest way to tell it's for a 700r4 is that it has 7 stops on the shifter instead of 6? Or is there a better way? And I assume a little surface rust is pretty much normal as long as function is good and all looks unmolested? I'll let you know if it's still there( I'm thinking real good chance)

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Surface rust is fine, they all have surface rust. I am not concerned with appearance as much as I am about function. That should be a way of telling what its for, yes. It's gotta be an 83, though.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Okay cool, I've got the description you gave above printed out, and I know it said on the windshield "83", but I'll check the vin as well. And I'll see if it has the transducer as well while I'm at it. Don't imagine I can test it though

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Oh yeah, and just remembered it didn't have a shift **** and probably not the plastic shifter stem . That's still OK? I'll' find something to use to test it's function though.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

I didn't expect to find one with a ****, they're allways missing. I have a stem from a later 3rd gen that may work so that not a big deal either. Just use a pen or pencil or something to test that the shifter works if its missing its stem lol.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

If it has the transducer its probably fried as well. But if you know how to see if its good and they charge you a decent price, than grab it and I'll buy it, too.

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

Well, good news-bad news. It's definitely an 83. It was just like you described with the hook and mounting points, etc. The reason I saw all this stuff before I realized today was that someone had demolished the console already. The cable on the driver side was unhooked and the part that the plastic rod pushes down on to move the shifter was completely missing. The rod and the shift **** were still there though. Seems kind of weird somebody would take that and not just get the whole mechanism, but????
So, it's still there if that does you any good. On the other hand, I got a bunch of other good stuff so the nice girl threw in the transponder for free. I'll have to research testing and let you know if I can tell anything. Has a sticker on it that looks like it would have fallen off if it was original, but?? Did score a mint dash cap from a 91TA. Wish I could figure out how to ship it anywhere..Well I tried...

Re: Looking for 83 Trans Am 700r4 Shifter

So you mean that the shifter is all there, but the mechanism that gets pressed down to move the shifter is missing? As in all you have to do is "push" the shifter and it moves to the next gear? Thats what mine does now.. So you managed to grab a transducer, thats cool. Let me know if it works, spin the lower cable mount and see if it spins the upper one without resistance, I think that would mean it works?

Thanks for checking on it for me!
