best cam for daily driven lo3
My mods are in the sig. Just wanted opinions on what cam would be the best for a daily driven 305 tbi. I've been looking at the crane 2020 compucam, 2030 compucam, lt1, and production lt4 cam. I want a cam in the 1000 to 5500 rpm range. Mainly I want over 200 rwhp and I want to use the stock swirlports. Thanks

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
Forget the 2020 Compucam...i have that in my 305 and you will see absolutely zero gains...it's barely over stock specs...the others i am not sure about but scratch the 2020 unless you want a brand new "stock" cam

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
Anything other than the stock cam will require tuning, so be prepared to do change over to the EBL when you do the cam swap. Comp Cams makes a Hydraulic Roller cam for the 1500-5500rpm range, but the kit is almost $800: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku
Hope this helps.

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
I was looking over an old post from fast 355 and found this I know this is just desktop dyno, but here is a 305 TBI, stock 187 heads with springs for .510" lift, GM STOCK LT4 cam (NOT HOT), full exhaust from the heads back including headers (avoid ones that say they are for LG4/L03s), ultimate TBI moded TBI, stock intake, open element, in a good tune. I would use a S10 2,000 (around 2,400 behind this engine) RPM stall behind this as well as 3.42-3.73 gears
The LT1 cam no headers is worth around 210 FWHP @ 4,500 and 278 ft/lbs @ 3,500. The LT4 cam with headers and a full exhaust is around 295 HP @ 5,000 and 346 ft/lbs @ 4,000.
If this Lt4 cam really produces that, that like 250 rwhp and 295 rft. Thats perfect. If someones running a combo like this, let me know how it is and dyno numbers would be great. For the tuning I plan on using windal and moates equipment the ebl is a little pricey.

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
You won't be able to get .510" lift out the stock heads. The valves only allow for a max of .480" lift. Unless you are planning to have some serious machining work done on the stock heads, look at aftermarket heads for that amount of lift. That way if you ever want to get a bigger cam or a 350, you aren't out tons of cash for machining work.

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
Don't you have to buy a burner with the ebl? I figured 250 for the moates and 350 for the ebl. Ebl is fine, I want to have the right stuff. You have pretty much the same as posted except with the lt1 cam. How do you like your setup, what does it make. Thanks Dave

No burner, no chips, no aldl cable, no ... and much faster and performance friendly.
My car is ok, nice improvement over stock. The cam, exhaust and EBL really make a difference.
Im still learning and have some improvements going one, thats also a good aspect of the EBL you can tune it drivable instantly and as you have a little time, playback a datalog and figure out what to do.
Side to side with "stock" bird mine only really starts pulling away around 30mph.

The K08-413-8 COMP Cam is the best cam for your application IMO. Has the power band you want and comes with everything you'd need except pushrods & rockers. But as I said before, you will have to tune the ECU after the cam swap. Shouldn't be too hard though, but I have little experience in tuning so I'll defer to the more senior opinion.
Aaron:
The EBL is an aftermarket ECU based on the stock ECU found in most Third gens. But it is a major update to what the stock unit is and its got almost everything you'd need for tuning.

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
08-500-8 specs
Comp Cams 08-500-8 "Xtreme Energy" hydraulic roller camshaft.
For 1987-1998, Computer controlled GM 305-350 originally equipped with hydraulic roller cam, except LT1 and LT4
Comp Cams "Xtreme Energy Cams" are the latest series of hydraulic roller cams to take advantage of the newest development of camshaft design and valve train technology. They have an aggressive lobe design that produces better throttle response than other cams with the same duration and they still deliver strong engine vacuum. "Xtreme Energy Cams" can be used for any street or street/strip application where both top end horsepower and good throttle response are desired.
Basic Operating RPM Range: 1,000-5,000 RPM
Duration at .050" lift: 206 int./212 exh.
Valve lift with 1.5 ratio: 0.480 int./0.488 exh. lift
Comp Cams 08-500-8 Xtreme Energy Cam CS XR258HR-12
• Aggressive lobe design
• Excellent throttle response
• Strong vacuum
• Excellent in high performance street/strip applications
• Good top end horsepower
This is what comp cams recomended, would this be better than the LT4 cam? With this cam my lift would be at .512/.520. Anthing else needed to run this cam other than what fast posted I read something about screw in studs. Where would I find these and how much our the Lt4 style retainers and springs.
Thanks for your help.

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
Well I was looking into the Lt4 specs their really not much different the comp cams is a little hotter but in the end it will cost almost twice as much and 10 hp isnt worth that im my opinion, so from what i've read it looks like the Lt4 cam is going to be my best bet since I already have the 1.6 roller rockers

Re: best cam for daily driven lo3
You have to remember, the COMP Cams cam comes will all the springs, lifters, retains and other things needed to install a cam. That LT4 cam being half the price of the COMP Cam is ok if you already have everything needed for it, otherwise you'll have to buy everything else that you need for the LT4 cam and that will be just as much or more than the COMP Cam.
