noisy T-10

I have a 82 Trans Am with a T-10 4-speed tranny when I first bought it, it had a loud whine in 3rd gear when accelerating and it would go away when you let off, and 4th gear is the opposite it would whine at cruising speed and go away when accelerating hard and the pitch of the whine would change when going over bumps?. Now after I've put about 7000 km on the car 2nd gear is starting to get noisy and its getting hard to shift in and out of gear?

Re: noisy T-10

Sounds like your tranny is getting worn out. Case stretched and letting gears mesh funny?
I think you're on borrowed time now. Maybe look at getting it rebuilt, it's a good tranny.

How much does a rebuild usually cost?

Re: noisy T-10

That's impossible to guess. Guys on here will tell you that the guy down the street (in alabama or some place where they still think it's the 80's, and everything is priced accordingly) only paid $400 for a rebuild. But up here I would be surprised if you could get it done for less than a $1000.
Call around. I think there's a pats driveline in surrey, they can do it. I have no idea how "interior" you are, that's kinda unspecific.

Re: noisy T-10

I changed the clutch last month and when I had the tranny out of the car I took the side cover off and every thing looked okay, there weren't any metal shavings or anything. could it be a worn synchro or bearing?

Very possible. Was it low on oil? Could possibly even be that.

How sure are you its the trans.... maybe its rear end noise? My rear end sounds just like that right now.

When I first bought the car the trans was low on oil. I am not sure if its the tranny. I changed the rear end and the noise stayed the same.

Re: noisy T-10

Well is the noise only noticed at a certain speed range or is it only in the different gears at whatever speed you happen to be at?

Sounds like theres nothing really "wrong" with it, in the sense that nothing is broken or missing... sounds like its just worn, and in need of a rebuild. Out of curiosity, what lubricant are you using in the trans?

I only suggested the rear end before because I had a similar issue with my first rear end.. sound seemed to be coming from the T5, but a few weeks later changed to the T10 (for other reasons) and the same sound was still there. Turned out the pinion bearing in the rear end was howling, and eventually the rear end blew up (though not because of that, I was quite abusive to that rear end lol).

I used some LUCAS manual trans oil. What kind of lubricant should I be using?

Re: noisy T-10

If its a thick, heavy gear oil then your probably ok. If I remember right, 80w90 gear oil is what GM recomends.

Re: noisy T-10

I fixed most of the noise today the shift linkages weren't adjusted right, thats why it was so hard to get into gear, when you would shift from second to third it wouldn't come all the way out of second, it still whines in 3rd and 4th but its no were near as loud.

shifting from 3rd to 4th is still kinda hard? I don't know if thats a shifter problem or if it inside the trans?

The ST10 trans is known to be kinda stiff-shifting... mine always has been, and theres nothing wrong with it. How stiff is yours?
