Putting a zz4 long block with hot cam into my 89 GTA any hints?
Hey there, I am new to this site, really like it though got so much insight in deciding which engine to buy for my car. My uncle left this car to me in great condition, cars don't rust in Victoria B.C. Canada and he babied it like crazy, so now that I blew the engine within the first day of taking ownership I want to do it right.
After tonnes of phone calls and hunting I discovered an awsome resource at GM this phone number below:
GM power train and performance parts center.
866-453-4123
The guys there, Keith in particular, are awesome, he litterally was looking through blue prints to match up bolt patterns of my TPI intake to the heads of the crate engine I was looking at and told me every crate engine long block that had heads that would work with my TPI. He said a hot cam in my zz4 should make it a zz430, not sure how much hp that is, but the zz4 already has 355hp.
Any way, this is my firs post so can someone reply with just a simple one word response so I know this works?
Thanks
Mike C.

It works well. you may have to slot the 2 center bolt holes on the lower intake.
Then have it tuned.

ZZ430 is 430 hp which has the hotcam and fastburn heads, which are better than zz4 heads but not all that great as cast.
ZZ4 with hotcam is more like a 380-400hp engine. BUT thats with an intake that can support the cam rpm range. TPI does not. Full aftermarket ported TPI can work well, but you'd give up 10-20hp but gain 20-30lb ft of torque over a intake design like the miniram/stealth ram, or a carbed dual plane intake.
The Fastburn 385 is the ZZ4 with just the fastburn heads only. 385hp so the hotcam addition is suppose to add 45 hp, and thats in the ball park. I'd only expect 30hp more in real life but I havent seen these motors dyno'd. I know the ZZ4 typically makes 340-345 hp which is 10 short than advertised.
So a hotcam, zz4 headed motor should equal the Fastburn 385 motor, IMO.

Cool, so If I leave the stock TPI and put in the hotcam, will that cause any problems? The guy at GM power train and performance parts center, said I may want to get a hotchip and calibrate my ECM also.
Thanks a bunch!

Hotcam will work with stock TPI with a tune, but your severely limiting the motor's power capability. You need the big tube runners and big mouth type base to flow more air to use that cam to its full potential.
Actually, a miniram or steath ram or single plane EFI would be best. The hotcam was designed for LT1/LT4 motors which basically are a miniram intake. Designed to rev out to over 6000 rpm. TPI is limited to about 4200 stock, up to 5000 aftermarket without siamesing. Some setups can pull alittle higher tho, depends on how big the runners are and how ported the base is. Hotcam wants to peak near 5800.
it will need a tune, meaning a custom chip for that setup.

i also ran the hotcam with full ported aftermarket tpi... .. it was a good match.. strong bottom end great mid and upper range power.. it best with a 2400 plus stall ( i was running a ten inch 300 stall) and a tune for it to really wake the car up..im running a FIRST intake now and its even a better match.. id say get it.. its a nice street cam..
