Similar to white1991rs the bottom photo is probably one of my favorite cold air intakes. Summit and Jegs Racing on line have a large selection of 14x3in round open air assembilies to look at. The local autoparts stores near me are carring the Spectre and K&N compleat assembilys. Heres mine with the cowl hood. =

Ohh I kinda like hat last one you posted Ron on the green camaro what is that air intake called so I can look it up. And as far as the Spectre goes I would never use a Spectre filter I just wanted the pipes then I was gonna get a k&n filter

The actual intake in the photo below is of a 1991 or 1992 TPI Camaro intake system.You can find them in the wrecking yards or EBay and I’m sure that places online that specialize in Camaro parts should have it. The TBI unit on our cars will need the Bonnet that goes over the throttle body and the snorkel that connects the two parts together like in the photo above. Should be able to find them online.
Side note = I was given the Spectre 14x3in element as a gift and I added the Summit brand filter top about 6 years ago. I have closely visually inspected the K&N filters and the Spectre and Summit filters side by side and other than mine coming in a really cool Red color could not tell the difference between the three as far as texture and thickness of material. They are made of the same cotton gauze material and filter in the same way. I even use the K&N cleaner and oil on mine. May be just looking is not a flow test but it’s the only tool I have. If I had to do it all over again I would chose the K&N because it’s made in the U.S.A. and that's really the only reason. Hay,maybe I will get this K&N system for my B-Day =

I subbed this thread hoping someone would have a place to get the carb/TBI hat and flex tube. I could not find anything like it. I already have the TPI airbox, I have been looking at a single plenum CAI hat by spectre. There are aluminum tubes and adapters that will work. But that last setup looks slick you posted Ron.
Edit; foot in my mouth, found the hat. Still curious as to the flex tube though. Is that from a TPI?

The flex tube looks like it's from a carb set up on a regular 3rd gen. Look at Post #3 and look on the right hand side of the motor.

I think you're right. but looking at the prices,$50 for the hat on fleabay and good luck finding a caddy in a yard in good ole WV. I may just go with the spectre hat and aluminum tube. Plus, the bend would have nothing to go around in my V belt pulley system.

Yes this or a close variation of it is what I would run if I did not have the cowl hood. This unit to me looks like one of if not the best cold air (ambient temperature) intakes I have ever seen with in the vehicle.

Try variations like "4.9 cadilac intake, plenum, air cleaner". You'll find sellers that should have the part. Just message them and ask about it.

Hey Ron. I have a question about your TBI intake setup with that CAI from the TPI car. I have the hat from the caddy and everything else but I can't see to get the hat on my TB. Did you do anything to make it fit to the TB?

The stud that holds the hat on will most likely need to change.
They make kits that you can find or order at Autozone and other automotive stores just for that problem.
Just a word of caution, when working over the TBI with small parts place a rag over the opening so you don't drop anything down into the unit.

You can remove the stock spacer/collar only if the unit does not hit the linkage. If it hits the linkage you must use it and address the stud problem.
As mentioned by robotic_junky, if you unscrew the stock stud a little it will be taller.

The hose you need is the same one that is connected on a air intake of a 1991 or 1992 TPI Camaro intake system . Find it either on ebay or a wrecking yard.
Linkage I am talking about is the mechanism on the side of the TBI that moves the throttle plates when you step on the gas pedal or use you hand while in the bay to rev the engine.
If anything is touching it ,it can jam the throttle.

For a long time now the term "Cold Air Intake" is used to describe just about any attempt to pull ambient air from outside the bay into a TBI/CARB/Etc.
I think that term was made up by some one trying to sell a product . "Cold Air" sounds pretty good.
The reason I posted this style intake to begin with is because IMO it comes as close to a actual "Cold Air" intake as you can get for a street legal Third Gen.

I would run it if I did not have the cowl hood.
I may not be pulling in air totally from outside of the bay but I really can't see not using it.
Open a cowl hood and its only natural to see the open air element.
Besides mines as close to a sealed cowl element as you can get without a air box around it.

White1991rs what air cleaner is that off of that you have. I have everything else but air cleaner I just swapped my TBI to carb performance parts and I still have all of my parts I followed that USMC told me to grab. Just that air cleaner on top is what I want to look for now. Lmao.

They will not.
Every thing before the cat that is related to SMOG in any way must be stock.
There are a few exceptions that are CA legal like some headers and I believe some Intake manifolds but they must have a special stamp saying so.
Even then it close.
I keep all of the stock pieces in the garage and install them every two years just to pass.

Has anyone attempted to use the Spectre air cleaner 14" low profile air housing on a mid 80s firebird here? I put on an Edelbrock 3701 intake manifold that raised the OEM carb up 1.-3/8 higher so I need something to drop the height down to clear the hood on a 86 Pontiac s/e 305 . pics would be nice here. I'm trying to see if it would work with the OEM HEI distributor as well.

Interesting fab work.
That hat/bonnet on top of your fuel system is restricting your air flow and starving the engine for air at high RPM.

too bad it’s doing exactly as i built it and making power at the exact range that the cam manufacturers spec was at, I won’t be telling the specs of my build and am not saying I have a super motor by any means. But it actually does work for the rpm range. Btw this motor doesn’t even have crazy lobe separation, duration or lift. If I wanted higher rpm I would’ve done those things, but this is just a street motor. I wouldn’t be showing a real race set up when most people who chime are just blowing smoke and can’t back it up with real test data.

The numbers that matter are the columns CHP. CLB concerning Flywheel HP and TQ. Again I’m not concerned with my numbers because I already made more without even pushing and I compare that against guys like BPE, GM and whoever so sftu. There actually is more power potential with the motor but the ECU being used only allows fuel and timing adjustments at 3 different pedal positions in a Edelbrock ProFlo4 anyways. But I’m sure with your vast experience in reading dyno data would you even know where to find this at anyways.
