Can you tint Tail Lights

I really like the look of the black tail light covers, especially on my Jet Black Iroc! But I hate the fact that tail lights covers are a cheap pep boys modification! I was wondering if I bought some VHT Nightshade From Summit, if i coult paint the inside of them. Also, can you remove the red and yellow film from the inside of the taillights??? any help is appreciated!:hail:

I took mine apart and painted the insides on my Trans Am.

Just my two cents,
Steve

I was thinking of using the VHT Nightshade on the outside of the taillights, i don't know what i'm going to do now. I ordered my VHT Nightshade from Jegs. You don't have to pay extreme summit hazardous shipping charges.

well, first off painting the inside won't do anything for making them darker, and there isn't any kind of "film" on the inside of the taillights. they are colored plastic. it's not hard.

1. remove taillights.

2. paint with VHT nightshades or Black Translucent model paint.

3. Let Dry.

4. Put taillights back on car.

5. Enjoy.

It's not that hard to do.

Yes you can tint ur tail lights... may not be legal in some places but it can be done...

Mix some black paint with clear coat and there u go, jsut spray away

MrIrocz had done this... (dont know if htats the exact name)

I am gonna find out if it is legal for inspection in NY, if so, i am definetly doing it

ImportsRsloths: Being that it's colored plastic, if you paint the inside of them the outside will still look EXACTLY the way they do now, but when you put your lights/brakes/signals on the light won't shine thru them as well...so basically waste of time for the effect you want to produce. Tinting the outside (I like the clearcoat with black mixed in idea best---most durable) will let the lights look tinted, they will however be a little dimmer. The nice thing about the clear/black combo is you can regulate how dark you want them so you don't get in trouble with the cops. Check your local laws....which brings me to the next paragraph.

Amrish: I'm a NY inspector....To get the car to pass inspection, and what is legal on the road is two different things. Stupid huh?? As far as inspection is concerned, when you turn the lights on they must shine red for brake and tail, amber or red for turn signal, and white for back-up. Clear taillights are NOT legal unless they have DOT stamp on them. How bright they are isn't really an issue for inspection as long as they light up. Taillight covers will cause a car to not pass inspection in NY. However...Vehicle and Traffic law doesn't really have a provision for this. The way V&T works.....If the light is red/amber/clear depending on what it does, and it can be seen from a certain distance, then it's legal to drive on the road whether the lights are tinted, painted, have covers on them, etc. It is incredibly stupid but that's how it is. In Upstate....a car doesn't need a muffler, tailpipe, or anything like that to pass inspection, as long as the convertor is there, it passes, EVEN IF YOU HOLLOW IT OUT!! But drive it down the road and you get stopped....Another can of worms....A Trooper can get you for being too loud, of if you get stopped by the Department of Environmental Conservation Police....they can nail you for the cat. Knowing these few tidbits.....With a lawyer...I bet anyone can get out of anything they do because the laws are written in 4 different versions for every type of thing one could possible do LOL!!

Now....If you want to do this tint thing...Here's an easy way without having to order niteshades and you can mix the darkness to your liking....At NAPA you can get a thing called PREVAL....it's an aerosol can with a glass bottle on the bottom that u can spray any liquid that u put in it. It produces a really nice finish too....So you could do touch up paint on your car etc with it if you wanted...Anyway....then you can buy little brush bottles of clearcoat, and black, pour clear into the preval, and add a drop or two of black till you get it to the darkness that you desire. Good luck. The Preval is about $8-$10 and you can probably spray about 3/4-1 pint of liquid thru it before it dies.

That is not true. I removed my taillight lenses from the housing and sprayed the inside with the VHT Nightshade and the lenses are much darker. You guys make it sound like the taillight lenses are solid colored plastic. if that was the case, how would the light shine through. If you do a search on this topic, you will find that most people had better results when they sprayed the inside of their lenses. the only bad part of this is that it is hell separating the taillights from the housing.

You may be right, but in the end, painting the inside of them is still going to have the outside looking red/amber/clear....just darker....where doing the outside will give a greyed/blacked out effect.

I should have pics this coming weekend, the tinted taillights are off my car right now because i just put some IROC taillights on, but im planning on tinting the IROCs this weekend, just dont know if i should do the inside again or the outside, cause like i said, it is a pain separating the lenses from the housing. But i will have pics of my car finally.

i was looking at my taillights the other day and i think that i am going to spray the outside this time. I just bought them off of ebay and the lenses have a tiny bit of overspray on them that i want to cover up. So you will be able to tell the difference between spraying the inside and outside.

1. so how did you end up separiting the lens from the plastic???
2. What color would you say it ended up being on the lights you painted the inside off??? (like a gray, or a light black or what)
3. can you still see the color of the lenses from the outside from a slight distance like 5 feet???

1. This is the hardest part, you just have to pry the lenses apart from the housing. There is some pretty tough sealant that keeps them together. You just have to take your time and dont put too much pressure when separating or something will crack. On one of my lenses i cracked the part of the lenses assembly that wraps over the top of the housing, but then second one came out perfect because i took more time.

2. I used an entire can of the VHT stuff, so they turned out pretty dark

3. Yes, from 5 feet away you can stuff slightly see the color of the lenses, dark red, dark yellow, and dark gray colors. I could have probably achieve the same effect by doing the outside because i was going for dark, it all depends on what you want.

Now i know what i want my IROCs to look light, dark, but able to tell the color of the lenses from up close. I love how the dark lenses look from far away, i cant wait to go home this weekend so i can do mine again.

Hey Mr. IROCZ, i remember reading a post that said you got your rims from Performance Wheel Outlet, didnt you buy the rims bare and paint them yourself. Im planning on getting some 17x8 irom rims and dont think i want polished or chrome, i know yours are 18s but how much did u get them for if you dont mind me asking. The website says they only sell polished and chrome, but i know that they have to be able to sell them bare or silver painted. THANK YOU

In NY....DEC Police are what we commonly refer to as a Game Warden. However, they have full Police powers such that a State Trooper has but they also have power to enforce Environmental Law which a Trooper doesn't have authority to enforce.

Unforgiven.......I know what you mean....they do actually look like they are dirty huh. Yeah, I think I am going to remove the tint and make them all red like that one show car camaro. It's kinda funny.....the older you get, the less **** u wanna do to your car. I want it to look stock, but have a kick *** motor.

You can't just paint the lenses and expect it to last. My friend and I did this to his 89 firebird and within a month ALL the paint had flaked off. You must first remove the lenses, sand them with 1000 or 1500 grit sandpaper, paint the lenses, then when the paint it completely dry, take some buffing compund and polishing compund to them. This is the only way to really make it look stock.
