Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
I dont know if you guys have the same issue but when I close my door (especially if the window is down) it closes with a clunk/bang--it just sounds cheap! Is there anyway to fix this? New door hinges? Additional weather stripping/rubber? Or is this just the way it is?

No man,the doors not suppose sound that way.
Yes,new w/s may be needed along with new hinges.
But,might not be that bad.
Heres a starter test for you.Open the door from outside the car, reach down and grab the bottom of the door and see how much up/down movement you have.If its just slight movement you could probably get away with new pin bushings.
If theres alot of play and scrape marks on the bottom of the door edge you will most likely need new hinges or at least the nice repair hinge kits available here

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
Also, there are two little rubber bumpers on the rear end of the door, right along the weather stripping. Make sure they are present. I just noticed yesterday that I only have one left on mine...
As for there being a difference w/ the window down, that may be the window moving around in there...? Or, with it down it makes it easier to just hear the resonant sound that a large hollow piece of metal makes when it closes... Only thing that would fix that would be the dynomat as suggested by Mathius. And, even that might not totally fix it.
Also, the lock actuating rods might be rattling around or something. Or maybe I just think of that cause my lock cyl was punched out and the rod is now just hanging around in there...
And, my side view mirror used to make a noise when I closed the door. Kind of a weird plastic vibratey noise. Fixed that just by removing the mirror "glass" and tightening the mounting screws for the power adjustment motor.
Anyway, good luck.
EDIT:
Attached a pic of the rubber bumper things I was talking about...

My doors had no play but they still sounded "tinny" so put some dynamat extreme on them under the door panels and they close with a nice solid "thump" now..
as mentioned above check your hardware, after that is fixed some sound deadener is the icing on the cake.

It also may be the handle to get into the car, My drivers handle was worn out and after replacing it I had no more clunks.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
As said... Check the door handles and all the hardware. See how the hinges are looking.
The other thing to check... There are little guides that sort of support the glass from moving left to right in the door. I believe there's supposed to be felt on them. Over time, the felt gets worn off, or those become loose.
My 86 that I have now is solid as is. Low mile, garage kept car. But my 87 had more miles and was alot more noisy. I used to roll my window all the way down, then just bump it up a tiny bit until the top of the window was in between the outer and inner window sweeps. That would keep the glass from rattling around.
I think I read somewhere how you can adjust the window mount points...or adjust how far it goes down due to wear... Check the tech articles for the heck of it.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
also you might try taking the door panels off and do a little tightening on all the bolts that hold the guts together.
you may also find that the rivits that hold the window motors in are loose
just some of the things that thirdgens need

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
Thanks guys! I did check the up and down movement on the door to check for worn hinges and there is no up/down movement whatsoever so my hinges are good. Ill take the door panel off and see what I can tighten up.
My last IROC sounded like this too so it may just be me.

What happened to the guy who previously offered kits for sagging doors ( I think his name was Andy) . Although not directly related, I have a problem with my door hanging low and it makes the door harder to close and in my opinion, sound cheap.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
Is the door rattleing as you drive the car.If so its probably loose/mis-adjusted hardware inside the door.
If your talking about the sound it makes when you close the door, like a thud.Check the striker, its that bolt on the door jamb. With the torx socket. It can be adjusted up/down, in/out.If its off just a bit it can make the door hard to close & sound like crap too.
I think classic sells andys door hinge kit now.Dont know what "andy" is up to these days.I still have that kit i bought years ago.Thinking my hinges were shot i bought a set, but they're still fiine!

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
No question... Top Down Solutions...a site sponser...is the only place to go for a lot of the door parts. He sells the replacement upper bushings, as well as the greasable ones. Lon knows his stuff and is very helpful. I ordered bushing kits, lower hinge pins, new strikers, new rollers...and a bunch of other stuff from him. Got a few tools to finish the job as well.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
Talk about a simple fix. Thank you Mathius! I started with something simple: lubricating the door latch and just doing that made a huge difference (probably helps too that I dont need to slam the door anymore!). You guys are awesome!

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
You should check your hinges and see if you need bushings down the road. PM Lonsal for specifics, but basically if you can open the door and wiggle it up and down, you probably need new bushings at minimum.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
I actually dont have any play at all (up or down) on the doors. I just didnt like the "clang" everytime you shut the door (especially if the windows were down). Lubing the latch mechanism really made a difference.
Overall the car is pretty solid and has very few rattles or squeeks which suprised me because my last IROC (1989 model) sounded like it was going to fall apart everytime I went over a bump.

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
I had a simmiler "tinny" sound.. turned out to be the body adhesive betwwen the door brace and the outer doorskin sheetmetal seperated...Made it sound alot better..

Re: Cheap sounding doors--any way to fix?
Another thing that causes the dorrs to rattle are the rubber guides that the edge of the window goes into. I found mine in peices in the bottom of the door. Anybody know where to get new rubber?
