sub enclosure in the spare tire well.... Kinda...

Well I got tired of not having any storage in the back of my Maro, and due to my job I have to carry various items of body armor, sometime a weapon case or two, and sometimes a Comm Suite. Back seat really ain't a good solution...

So today I pulled out my well box that filled the entire well area flush with the rest of the trunk. After a bit of measuring I found that I could fit a box 14 X 11 X 12 that comes to just under 1cu on the shelf by the spare tire well and sticking back into it. 30 mins later I had one cut out and glued up. it is in the car now drying and later tonight Ill fire it up and see how it sounds. the sub is a single 10" type R firing horizontally at the drivers rear fender. A sealed box is speced at 1 Cubic foot so mine should be fine, might add Polyfill to it just in case. I made this out of scrap MDF I had here and cut it out with a jigsaw so the edges aren't perfect, but it was just to give me an idea if it would work or not. if it works good, Ill remake the box but a bit better and make it so that I can actually put the rear trim back in and have the back angled so that It follows the contour a bit better. should have that one done up by Saturday or Sunday... IF this sounds decent.

pics also :] .. but if the edges are a little rough just use some type of caulk so it's airtight.. well you should do that anyway.. but it'll fill in spots where it's uneven

Ok, first box was nothing special, second box still needs to be covered with carpet. I fudged on the angles of the cuts in two places so it dosent follow the angle of the well... but oh well, it will work for now.

First pic is a quick paintshop pic of what the dimensions are... the angled cuts were done at 16 deg. I thought that was the right angle but well the pics kinda prove otherwise...

next is a shot from the side or the car...

here is a shot from the rear...

The box is made out of 3/4 inch Birch Plywood. it is 14 inches long. internal cubes came out to just below 1 foot, about .903 or so. It fits back as far into the spare tire area as I could build it, and in the trunk it is flush with the edge of the shelf on that side.

I had to trim the poo poo outta my spare tire cover, but that is fins it was broken at the bottom below the vents anyway. I still want to make a fiberglass box this summer when it is warmer that fits totally into the spare tire well and dosent come into the trunk, but for now in the cold wind Ive been working in, this is fine for me. sounds pretty good to. I was worried about the box resonating, but it really dosent seem to be. Hopefully next weekend I can cover it with carpet

I've seen the spare tire well stealth boxes done before and they looked great. I'de love to do a setup like that but it would be pretty involved, Fiberglass would definetly be the way to go.
