Ebay F-body sub box??

I need a sub box for my 87 trans am. i've been searching all over and i keep comming up with the $50 ebay specials. I've found a few other boxes but frankly they all look the same but some sites want $200. I'm not new to the car audio world having done 3 complete systems and usually i know you get what you pay for. Anyone know if these ebay boxes are any good? the dimensions look right. i'd like to save some money here if i can. heres the link below not sure if it'll work

tbh best thing you can do is build one yourself... premade boxes arent that great.. unless your getting it from a small shop or from someone who really knows what there doing

good point but i've never built a sub box by myself and i really don't know what i'm doing i will say i did buy one prefab box for a car for low $ and was very impressed at how solid it was and comparable to the custom boxes of others. this is why i'm posting to see if anyone has first hand experience with these boxes from ebay or wherever. thanks for the help bandit

First...........welcome to the board.

Ask the seller how thick is the MDF. The specials might be only 3/8" thick. The $200 box might be 3/4".

I agree that the best bet is to have a shop custom make the box to fit your subs. A generic box will make some subs sound lousy. Get a box that is TUNED for the sub. NOT the other way around.

Good luck..............

true

all good advice bills. correct me if i'm wrong but the space for an f-body box is going to make most boxes around the same size right?? mabye i'm assuming too much but because of the strange trunk space to fill i feel like i kinda need to get a prefab then find a sub that will work with the box size. its a$$ backwards i know. don't you think 200 is a bit steep for a sub box? i'm actually picky about my car audio believe it or not but seems hight

hmm i see it said it is a sealed box... I wouldent get it, if you want good sound get a ported box plus Dual 12" subs in a small non-ported box you would want to hope there is a division in there or the subs will be fighting eatchother and it would sound c**p.

EDIT: just to add IF it has a divisoin in there it would half the air space inside the box for eatch sub.

Well, having personally bought a box made just for our cars off of EBAY, I have to say that the one I bought was top notch quality.

The box itself was very, very sturdy to say the least, it IS a sealed box, the material on the box was quality stuff, the terminals in the back were done right, there is a division in the middle for each sub, and every seam/edge was glued tight with silicone.

This is a slightly old pic, my box is now covered with grey carpet to match the interior.

I bought my box for 25$, forget these custom places that charge 200$ a box, i'll take the EXACT same thing for a fraction of the price thank you.

And BTW, it sounds great too

not saying it don't sound good now but if you ported that box say a 2" hole in eatch top corner you would get more BOOM with youre bass.
That dose look real good tho

Hehe, the reason I wanted a sealed box was because Im going for sound quality, not flat out boom boom volume.

That tight punchy bass is what im all about

Also, to do a ported box correctly, it requires MUCH more air space. I am doing away with (as in trying to sell - with speakers) a dual 10" (JL 10W6) enclosure, and having a new enclosure made for a single 12" which should outperform both of the 10's. Requires only 1.25 cf airspace sealed, but twice that if ported.

Axle/Gears: huh?? guessing stock.
not to mention if you port it correctly you have to take into account the HZ you want the box to be tuned to. this decides the port length and size. Just drilling a 2 inch hole is NOT the answer to porting.

i know that, my sub boz has a 3.5" hole and a tunel going from one side and almost to the other but that is with a Single 12" MTX RoadThunder 400W with the MTX Box made for my sub. it is killer but it is a big box for 1 sub.

i still wouldnt buy it no matter how sturdy it is.. like everyone said.. there not built to your subs specs.... plus if your paying $200 for that.. you might as well pay the 60 or 70 and go by the plans on this website.. my opinion though

Car: 90 R/S camaro 3.1L stock,
Here check out this thred. It has the dimensions for the sub enclosure in a pdf and a blueprint. It's basicaly same as above photos and like the 1 i build non-ported to handel my 12 inch infinity .Once ya have the box built just cut the lid ta fit yer sub and tune TO YOUR OWN TASTE.(IE.add insulation or ports or whatever ya like)But do it to suit YOUR ears not everyone elses.Mine at low volume sounds like thunder inside rollin down the interstate. At high volume the wife hears me comin inside the house when i'm about 5 doors down the road.(Aprox 1 city block.)When i have a bad night at work and blast my AC/DC for the hour ride home on the interstate my ears are lightly ringin for about an hr after i get home.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...sub-box-2.html

Theres the thred.Enjoy.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

Does the ebay box leave any space in between the very bottom of the well and the box to put my amp and what is the airspace volume of that box...I emailed the seller about 2 weeks ago...still no reply.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

even if it does why would you mount an amp there? security I know but you will over heat the amp. it cools from airspace. if there is no air moving it overheats. unless you are talking about a completely different spot than I am thinking. just mount the amp with security torx screws.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

That is where I have my amp now and it doesn't overheat. I want it there to hide it, for a cleaner install because the amp I just purchased is 24 and a 1/4 inch long. I just want to see subs, but the box I have now, I can't run my JL subs or Type R's, not enough airspace in my tiny MTX sealed box.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

Just to show how criticle airflow is for an AMP.
I used a small temp probe with guage designed to fit in the radiator fins just to try this out i hooked it into the fins on the side of my AMP and ran it full blast for a 10 min in the open and in the bottom of the well with the sub over it, it was a 24'C hotter in the well and it was running at 28'C in the open (not moving but with back window up for airflow).

This reading was on a 22'C day so it was not very hot, if it was a 30'C+ day that reading would probly double.

this is a 1200W amp running 1x 250W RMS sub and 2x 100W RMS 6x9"s (roughly)

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

my point exactly I guess if you are running a 250-350 watt amp it isn't that big of a difference but if you are running two Alpine 1000 watt mono amps you have to have airflow. The reason behind most competition installs having an acrylic box around the amps alot of time is to mount high cfm fans to cool more efficiently and still have a visual impact. I have less to worry about than most on here though because I have a convertible (trunk instead of hatch) so it won't be seen most of the time but I have more to worry about cooling wise also.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

I just got my box built and it looks great and sounds great!!! I built it myself and it is getting covered with Medium Grey carpet tomorrow. No amp overheating yet, but before the summer I am putting a small 12 volt fan with a relay using the amp remote as a switch to supply a little air to the amp under the box. The amp isn't close to the box that much, but it is still getting no airflow because of the tight fit of the box. It is down firing with the amp and cap below the box so it is completely stealth. Here is a few pics with the camera phone...

I orderd mine off ebay and I am happy with it. It fits good and pounds hard. I haven't tried anyother box so I could be missing out. But right now I need a new amp, cuz my hand me down amp is about 15 years old.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

I have the same box that everyone is calling the ebay box although I got it at my sound shop. I liked it. I was not concerned with ported sound. And there is enough room underneath to put your amp. My amp is there and I never had a problem with it. For $25-50 you can't go wrong. If you don't like it then sell it.

Re: Ebay F-body sub box??

well not to be the forum negative nancy but.... did anyone notice that they used CAD drawings and CNC machines.... lol sounds sketchy to me man lol a cnc machines alone will run you about 50.000 for a bs one and cad software will also run you a couple thousand dollars..... The numbers don’t add up for me. I’m not saying the sub box won’t work but why all the hype??? If you really wanna impress me tell me it was made by ninjas with no thumbs
