speaker polarity ??
Trying to determine polarity so i can wire the new ones correctly. Used my meter and read 6 volts on BOTH leads from the stereo to the speaker. Figured I would read 6 volts on one and -6volts on the other, thereby determining my polarity. I swapped the leads around (red to ground, black to the wire and read -6 volts on BOTH ! What gives ?? Does it even matter which how i wire these ? Replacing the factory 4x6's in the dash. THANKS

Re: speaker polarity ??
You can wire speakers in either direction and they'll work just fine - the catch is that if all of the speakers are not wired the same, you may notice a delay in the sound from them. There is a noticeable difference in the synchronicity if three are wired P-P, N-N and one is wired P-N, N-P. So the best idea is to get a wiring diagram (sorry, don't have mine on me right now) and ensure your red speaker wires are actually going to the positive speaker wire.

Re: speaker polarity ??
I seem to recall reading somewhere that it doesn't really matter which lead you attach to which terminal (positive or negative) The way that I understand it is unless you're getting into something like dual voice coils on subwoofers, a speaker is wired the same way in as it is out and that direction of electron flow (aka power flow) doesn't matter. I've wired several 6x9"s without knowing which terminal was positive or negative, and I've never run into a problem, and I would imagine it would be the same for the 4x6"s. I can't have just been lucky enough to know which was which every single time. I say don't worry about it, but I'd be interested to know what others who have more experience/knowledge than I do think.

Re: speaker polarity ??
That link was really helpful, however you have to have the old speakers to do the battery test then you can match the polarity to the existing wires. Problem is, I dont have the old speakers(sucks). I have a Haynes manuel and in the electrical schematic it shows what color wires go where, but doesnt identify the polarity. There has to be a diagram out there that shows the polarity of the wires ! Again, really appreciate the link ! So if anyone out there knows where I can find this out hit this up !!! THANKS

Re: speaker polarity ??
9 times out of 10 any speaker wire coming from a headunit, the positive speaker wire will be a solid color, and the negative speaker wire will have a stripe on it.

Re: speaker polarity ??
Most aftermarket speakers have a smaller spade teminal on the negative input than the positive has. As for wiring, if it's for a stock head unit, this diagram might help, it's for an 89+ harness, but the color coding is pretty much the same. On aftermarket decks, as previously mentioned, negative leads almost always have the stripe.

This is exactly what I was looking for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Al. BTW, I posted awhile back about wanting to install a newer Delco CD player and was wondering if it could be done. Later, I saw the pics of your install and decided thats exactly what I was looking to do. Thanks for the idea and I'm hoping to have my Theftlock insalled soon. Good lookin out Al !
