Dash speaker recomendations?
My 82 fbird has some kick butt boston accustics in the dash the problem is they dont bolt in The guy that owned it before me used padding to hold them up. I would like some recomendations on speakers that will fit in the dash and bolt down. Preferbly under 100$ Maybe a decent sounding speaker that i can get at wallmart like pioner or sony stuff like that.

I'd suggest modifying your dash to make the Bostons fit. There are instructions in the technical section of this website and at iroc.fbody.com.

I agree with Jim Boston Acoustic has very good sound quality and if they can be salvaged I would. As for replacments under $100.00 I have the Kenwood Excelon 4x6's and they have good upper mids and highs but they can't take much power unless your using a crossover.

I installed a set of Pioneer TS-P462 4x6 plate separates in the dash of my sons Camaro. I believe I paid $97. They are a sh$t load better than factory, but to be honest, they sound a little harsh to me. I like Boston Accoustics and Kicker.

I am not sure which Boston's you have, but I have the CX7 4x6 in the dash and they bolted in with no problem. I know that Boston replaced the CX series with the FX series, but I'm not sure when and if they are any different as far as mounting goes. Good luck.

I have some Polk 4x6's in the dash and have gotten them to fit with out modifying the dash. The left one almost fits perfectly but the gagues below are in the way. It doesn't effect the dash or the gagues and doesn't rattle so I just left it. They sound fabulous and they would be suffering if it weren't for the Pioneer DEH7200 with built in crossover. I have them crossed over at 125Hz and can't get them to blow. They are so loud it hurts Loud, crystal clear, and virtually no distortion for $89.

i put some sony x-plod 5 1/4 speakers in the dash with componedt tweeters down by the console on the hush panel. makin the 5 1/4 fit was a pain cause they were too deep. rigging stuff in the dash to make it fit is a pain.

there are 2 versions of boston 4x6's, i assume yours has only one mounting hole in each corner, this is the european version w/ a depth of 2". the other ones have 39876482742435 different mounting holes w/ a depth of 1 3/4" that will fit our cars. if you have enough clearance up top, just used a few washers and longer screws to secure it.

I had Infinity Reference 4x6 2-ways; but blew them out (wasn't using a crossover). Now I have Pioneer 4x6 2-ways in there.

wow, I can't beleive nobody suggested MBQuart
DKD116's. I have a set in my 89 and I have never heard anything better up there...Work at a car stereo store and I have heard most brands... only other choices would be boston's or the infinity kappa series, however, the infinity kappa's have a depth problem and you may not be able to make them fit...

Yes, they are all great speakers, but...
The highs will NOT pass through the plastic grills. Cut the frame out with a dremel and get some speaker grill cloth and hot glue it to the back of the frame. Then put a plate in it (not too brand specific because I'm already considered an old timer on this sh:t, personally I used an infinity plate, but pioneer, kicker, whatever good brand will work just as well)

And get some stuffing from like Wal-Mart and stuff around the speaker to help seal it up.

6X9's in the dash is impossible!! Post a picture to prove otherwise! I just installed a pair of Infinity Kappa 462.1cf' 4x6 plates in my dash and it was Hell getting them to fit. I had to remove a defrost duct and then I used a heat gun to soften the heater duct enough to make room for the rather large magnet structure. Then I didnt have enough depth and I had to break out the top of the casing behind the instrument cluster. There is no way I could concieve of getting any larger speaker than what I had put in.
By the way the Infinity Kappas were worth the effort and they are Loud and Clear and can take on 100watts RMS with ease! They are equal to Infinitys 4" component sets.
