Holley Commander 950 ECU

I was just wondering if anyone is using the Holley Commander 950 ECU and if so, how do you like it?

I'm thinking of giving this a shot, but wanted to get some feedback first.

Thanks!

I'm using it with my Holley Stealth Ram and I like it quite well. I'm still getting everything fine tuned but it's pretty fun to play with and easy to understand. Holley's install guide/tuning manual that they include is pretty detailed and gives you a good start on getting everything tuned. I'd recommend it!

Thanks for the info...

Do you go with the ECU, harness and calibration software as a kit? Who do you go thru to purchase it?

Thanks,

Joe

Yep, I got the TPI kit with the ECU, software, harness, and a few sensors. I got it through my speed shop. You could save a few bucks if u get it through Summit, but my speed shop got me a price pretty close so I went with it. Good luck, and let me know if I can help with anything else!

Thanks Paul...I'm going to check into the prices and so on with this and see when I can get it rollin.

Do you have the choice of changing to a 2 bar MAP sensor, or does the ECU and software have the capabilities? I am installing a turbo within the next year and want to have a system that is capable of running with this setup, rather than having to get something different later.

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,

Joe

Not a problem at all Joe! I love helping out a fellow automotive enthusiast whenever I can Within the C950 software you can select between a 1, 2, or even 3 bar MAP sensor, so it should work great with your turbo setup. There's one guy I know of who ran a homebrewed twin turbo setup on his Camaro using the C950 and it worked out great for him! There's some good info on his setup (he's sold it now) on his site here: http://www.geocities.com/kingtaling/ He's a member of this site also, his screen name is Kingtal0n. Hope I helped, let me know if I can give you any more info, good luck!!

Did you upgrade your unit/software to use the wideband O2 sensor they have now?

I got my unit at the end of this past summer, after the point in time when they started equipping all the C950 units with the PRO software/firmware. My unit is fully capeable of functioning with a wideband O2 unit, and that is one of my next planned upgrades for it. I know it will help fine tuning the car immensely! In any case, if you buy a new kit now it will be all ready to work with a wideband unit.

I've got an about a 1.5 year old on new in box TBI unit. You can send in the older units to get upgraded.I can't seem to get an answer if that upgrade works with the TBI, I would guess it would. Or I could just use the 950 and pull the TBI pods off the throttle body and put it on a manifold with injector bungs welded on for a multipoint(with an appropriate wiring harness).

I assume the wide band allows the computer to tune itself some doesn't it?

The upgrade should work with the TBI. The biggest portion of the upgrade is the wideband capeability from what I understand. There are a few other things which are added as well, such as an internal datalogger, but I can't remember all of them right off the top of my head. As far as the wideband, you still have to set up your base maps appropriately, but the wideband will allow for more precise determination of what the engine is actually doing. Another neat feature is that you can set it up to run at a specific A/F ratio at certain RPM/vacuum levels, so you can, for instance, run richer at idle with a big cam but still be set up to dial in leaner at cruise for better fuel economy. It's a pretty neat setup, and I'm hoping to get a wideband on my car this summer and really get things dialed in!

P.S. I would highly recommend downloading the latest C950 manual from Holley's website, it goes into some pretty good detail about the wideband stuff, and it's a very helpful manual!!

I recently got one of Innovative Motorsports wideband meters (pretty cheap)and have been using it to tweak on some carburated cars. Its amazing how all the carb circuits affect other parts of the fuel curve. A rich idle circuit carries over into the lower rpm cruise mode also. Leaning it leans this part of the curve out also. Doing other parts of the curve(WOT, part throttle gas its)without their MAP sensor sometimes gives you more questions than answers on if the secondaries have kicked in or the power circuit has kicked in. It can be calibrated for the Commander system also I believe.

RPM limit?

Is there an ultimate RPM limit for the Commander 950? I've got a high-rpm mechanical roller motor and I'm thinking about using the HRS or pro-jection with C950.
