Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

I have made a custom fabricated fuel pick-up with a size ten braided steel line going through it. Here is the picture of a product that nobody makes. If you are building a car and want to keep the stock look then this is the way to go for you carburetor guys if you're making lots of power.

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

Do you have a hole in the floor on the inside of the car? because that sure isnt gonna fit back in there like that.

You should have used a hardline inside it also. No need for a piece of braided line sitting in the fuel.

Probably want to put a sock on that or something, too.

i was going to do a hard line but the breaded line is more than rigid enough i own a welding company so trust me no shmo did this work. that braided line was the cheapest way to do it and the easiest way also i have more pictures and also a short video if you want to see just e-mail me at portmercenary1@yahoo.com here is a picture of what it looks like installed

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

The current formulations of earls and aeroquip (for sure, I’ll bet the others also) rubber lined fuel line falls apart when submerged in the current mixture of gasoline (10% ethanol). With EFI type pressures it will fail in less then a week (I had it happen a few times in a friend’s truck and he finally called me to look at it and tell him why it was failing).

For that matter it’s never been the right thing to use in tank. There is a different certification for something that will tolerate being submerged in fuel as opposed to just carrying it, and braded line has never met that standard.

What Mark said(83 Crossfire TA) I was just to lazy to post it the other night.
FOr what you did you should have just put a sump on the bottom of the tank. Or just welded the an fittings to it.

Fab still have nothing to do with the hose quality going in the tank. Idea is good! I did the same thing when I swaped to a inline pump but I used hardline.

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

Well, with hardline and a little creativity you could definitely get that bend down foar enough that it would clear the floor. Alternatively, if you really have to you could put a 90* bulkhead through the plate, and then either weld some aluminum hardline to the inside side of it, or just flair, tube sleeve and tube nut the hardline and screw it on.

Of course, if possible sumping the tank is always better at that point.

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

I had a radiator company do something very similar but with the same size tubing as that is run to the tank for an inline system for my chevy pickup, I used a sock filter on it though.. I am going to have to run a hard line cause I want to do something like this to my camaro, with 8an what size hard line tubing should be in the tank?

Why braided line? I'm sure there was a reason you thought of and thats why you went with it.

I don't get the connection. Welding has nothing to do with building fuel systems.

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

I would have welded a sump on the back of the tank since you own a welding company it should be easy for you. I can run 2 -10 lines off my tank.

i hate it when people cheese out and cut up the floor to get to the fuel unit, the unit looks interesting though...

I have ran so many threads about cutting access hole for sump removal down, cause I just have never understood it.. Would you just cut a hole in your fender to get your antenna out or a power antenna in? When my pickup was sump was done we used the same hardline tubing that is on the outside, would you hoave to use some .45id and .54 od hardline to make an 8 an work? I don't want to see the fuel lines out of the back of the car if I have to sump the tank, and have seen many people mess up and sump the rear and ruin their rear axle travel.. I am trying to put good hard lines in without anyone really knowing what I have.. I don'twant to see the fuel lines, but this hard line is the way to go! Never have to drop your tank again unless the guage breaks..

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

sump is NO WHERE near the rear end which is in front of the gas tank. Furthermore just keeping the muffler heat shield on would "hide" the lines I suppose, but the second I turn on my fuel pump everyone knows that there is a big pump so you're not going to fool anyone.

Re: Custom fabricated fuel pick-up

I like the idea, though I don't own a third gen, I am contemplating cutting a hole in the floor of my Jimmy ('85 S-series), to have quick access to my pump, and sending unit. I've dropped it several times in the past just swap out the pump or sending unit, 3 times withing like 2 months at one pint due to changes I was making to the truck.

I would have also used hard line on the inside, for me, mostly due to cost though, the point of hose failure is a better one.

Hmm, maybe I will upgrade my 3/8 to 1/2" fuel line.

Maybe in a street only car/show car/something rare… in a car that is going to see any track time or serious work I wouldn’t go any other way.
