Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

I decided to try and build a ford 8.8 for my car out of a 92 explorer. I am going to go with a mini ladder bar setup which will work fine for my application eliminating the torque arm. I decided to use the 8.8 which was by far cheeper to start with. The ring gear is .075" smaller then the gm 12 bolt which measures 8.875 , so strength is not the issue with this axle plus it comes with a 31 spline posi carrier.

WOW!! How straight did the tubes stay? Also, why did you add that to the lca? I assume your still running a torque arm right?

I like that, cool custom work. Haven't seen that exact kind of design for the control arms, but looks good. I think you'll be surprised how that setup will lift the back-end up when you get on the gas.

I'm thinking the same thing. Welding all the way around the tube for the sleeve will have warped the tubes. I doubt the axles are lined up properly. be prepared to break an axle.

Those "lift bars" are junk. You went through all the trouble to install a better diff than the 7.5" and took a step backward with junk suspension.

Re: Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

As far as the axle tubes being welded I had an alignment bar machined that center in an old carrier with out the spider gears, then I had it machined to firmly press into the axle bearing which I replaced. As far as my " junk lift bars" are concerned, if g-force suspensions make them for camaros, which they have time and research in , they are good enough for me. Thank you for you constructive opinions!!!

All you did was state your opinion. Rather rudely I might add. Do you have any constructive information as to why those lift bars wont work well? I love my lift bars on my 2nd gen. I don't see why his set up wont work. I understand the torque arm set up on third gens works great, but it looks like this was his solution to no torque arm mount on the 8.8.

Re: Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

Looks great!
Can you put up some pics of the alignment bar for the axle tubes?

Wouldn't it be easier to just have welded the Camaro spring perches and bearing axle tube ends onto the Ford tubes, saving the need to align the tubes?

All that work too, and still have the drums..?

Re: Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

I am sorry, of all the pics I took I did not snap one of my alignment bar. Just had it machined to fit the carrier and then had the wheel bearing end machined to 1.401" when I was done welding just pulled the bar out. I did tack weld at 12:00-6:00-3:00-9:00 on my tubes to start with then filled them in oposite axle sides to keep the heat down. I could have welded the brackets to the axle tubes but the explorer has offset axles. That would not have worked. I could have used a mustang axle which has 0 axle offset, but people are proud of those things around here. Now as far as my high dollar drum brakes, come on give me a break here!! Ha.. If this all works out ok I will put more $$ into it later and upgrade. This has been fun project so far. I want to add one more thing, I got alot of my info on this from ls1tech.com. Alot of camaro guys there to, heck ya!! So take the time to check out there drivetrain section.

Re: Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

what are you using for axles?

nice work so far. Did you have to narrow the rear as it sat, or would the original width have worked?

Re: Ford 8.8 to replace the 7.5

I will order 31 spline axles from jaws gear. I did narrow the ford axle.
