88 Notchback On Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-...=p4506.c0.m245

Please give you thoughts. Notchbacks are cool but I think the price is a little over the top for the condition of this car.

Unfortunately, although the car is a limited "rare" edition (718 built, one year only) it's desirability is fairly low as it wasn't received well. It was also subject to numerous fitment issues, that Frankie has discussed and discovered with a contact he had inside GM. Of course history does have examples of cars that weren't desirable at the time, are now desirable and worth a premium. Even some of the "ugliest" cars, which some might consider the Notchback as.

I don't think the seller will be able to move the car at the starting bid of 8K, let alone the 20K buy it now.

Frankie and I discussed this before, but the seller is a bit uninformed. There is no way that we know of to figure out what he stated:

BUT LESS THAN 26 CAME WITH A 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND A DIGITAL DASH
There is no records to support his statement above. In addition, given that the digital dash outsold the analog dash in 1988, I wouldn't consider the digital dash rare in that equalization.

Good luck......For 20 big ones there are a lot of choices. A Notchback isn't that significant & certainly not that one.

Re: 88 Notchback On Ebay

Well I'm glad to see that you all think the same way I did. The notchback has grown on me over the years but in order to fetch 20k it would need to be perfect shape with incredibly low miles. Even 8K would require a really good car in today market.

For that kind of coin, I'd rather have a TTA.

Diplomatically stated like a true Administrator, JT.

In layman's terms.... this guy's crazy if he thinks that car will sell at that price.

Well, the Notchback was only available on the GTA, not the Trans AM. So in addition to the differences between a GTA and Trans AM, and the difference of the fiberglass decklid, the only other difference is the integrated headrests on the rear seats - which the Turbo Trans AM also received in 1989 as shown below:

In short, it was simply an appearance/cosmetic package/option.

Re: 88 Notchback On Ebay

the the hatch and the rear seat back rest are the only difference , doesn't seem like enough to increase the value by much .

btw , a gta is not a trans am ?

either way , im a camaro guy so i never payed much attention to those cars or their history .

Re: 88 Notchback On Ebay

a car is only worth what someone will pay for it. around my area you can find cars for $2500 i go on ebay and see cars in almost the same condition going for $4000. if they gave it some paint and put it on Barette Jackson Car Show (sp?) it could go for $100K.

Re: 88 Notchback On Ebay

There's a black one for sale just outside of Milwaukee, WI with only 74,000 miles on it and the dealer is asking like $7995 for it. Black, tan leather interior. I only noticed 2 small dings on the body. Other then that it's in excellent shape.

Yes, it was/is, but what JT is saying is that the Notchback was not an option for the standard Trans Am.... only for the GTA model.

As far as how it affects a car's value, for some people it is the fact that the Notchback was a one-year option only and the production number (718) was low considering the number of GTAs built that year.

Does that make it rare to you.... you decide that. To each, his (or her) own.

They're having a tough time selling it. Thats at least the third time I've seen it listed. In regards to the notchback, you can still get one aftermarket for $450. I believe they're fiberglass. I assume the origionals were stamped steel? Also, for the notchback historians, here's a Pontiac Motors brochure on Ebay for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-...spagenameZWDVW

The original is fiberglass, not steel. In addition, the aftermarket ones are not 100% reproductions of the original (some like it, some don't).

Re: 88 Notchback On Ebay

There was just a feature on a similar GTA in Pontiac High Performance - June I think. The magazine one was a time capsule car though, mint original shape with very low miles. It is a fairly rare car, there were only 809 5-speed GTA's in 88. Combine that with the limited number of notchbacks, and the fact that not all GTAs got the digi-dash (something like half of them I think), and it should be one of a few hundred, maybe less. It does look complete, although it needs plenty of work, and the high miles already killed any "barret jackson" effect. Still, for 10k it could make a nice, attainable rare thirdgen. On the other hand, 10k would buy a TTA in similar condition, and I'd rather have a turbo

Also, misteroman there was never a factory notchback camaro. Pontiac did it trying to make the firebird look less like the camaro without having to make any major changes to the chassis. It's gotta be either a pontiac hatch, or one of the various aftermarket ones available.
