Rare Camaro Performance options

This is from the September 1990 Super Chevy. Okfoz, notice the 1985 G92 is 205 produced.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

I don't usually rely on magazines to produce accurate numbers. Look at the 1987 statistics on the last page. It shows that 3452 IROC-Zs were produced, when in actuality, there was 38,889. They then state that there were 12,105 L98 backed cars. The L98 was only available on the IROC-Z and not the Z28, so those numbers don't match. Lastly, something most magazines won't know to publish for 1987 is that all 12,105 L98 based IROC-Zs had G92 options without the code. All G92 options were mandatory with the 350, so the RPO code isn't listed on 350 based cars, in 1987 only.

I could be wrong here, but I think their numbers are incorrect for radio delete. I don't have any documentation in front of me to verify that, so someone may want to correct me if needed.

The 87 production numbers are all over the place. The 1985 G92 is only the second time I have seen in print and both are 205 made. For some reason the G92 in 1985 was rare. probably because of c.a.f.e.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

Page one appears to mention the 305 LB9 as rated at 245hp! I've never seen it rated in any article higher than 230hp. But I have seen the 350 L98 rated at 245hp. Later in the article it has the more correct numbers.
As for the '87 RPO UL5 (radio delete) prod #'s . . . it looks correct.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

The Camaro White Book has all the same production numbers listed as your article except the total production of Z28s are at 68,403 for 1985. Your article has the number at 68,199, if you add the G-92 cars which were supposed to be 205 you get 68,404 units built for 1985 its interesting that the numbers get within one unit with the 205 G-92 cars added. The White Book also doesn't have the 205 G-92 listed for 1985. It's probably another error.
Not to change the subject, but can you find anything on the 1985 1C5 California IrocZ?

Doing a search on this messageboard can give quite a bit of info already presented on this topic.
Here's a good one . . . https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...rnia-iroc.html

Next time be sure to ask off-topic questions as a new topic. Highjacking a thread will get you 20 minutes in detention from the moderators.

The best number I can find for the Calif IROC is 502... Not sure if it is correct or not, but that is the common consensus. Seems about right for the number I have actually seen.

Interestingly the 87 IROC in the April 1992 Camaro Corral also has a production of 3452...

I am not entirely sure why, but even the White book for 1987 is wrong on many things, like the LT information, it has 794 listed... That is fine and dandy until you add up the tire useage which was all LT only 4,522 2,242 1,793 which gives us a total of 8,557... All of a sudden something does not add up. You add up all of the tires in the list in the White book and you get the total number produced, so all tires are listed...

Scott,
I think ultimately we can assess that the 1987 information will be forever wrong... No matter where you look it will never be correct.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

That is a given at this point thanks to the first year of option packages and not individual option listings. 1987 will go down in history as a botched up year for information.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

Here is some information that may or may not be accurate, BUT they are numbers on some of the Option packages
1SA - Opt Pkg 1 - 6,210
1SB - Opt Pkg 2 - 45,492
1SC - Opt Pkg 3 - 51,201
1SD - Opt Pkg 4 - 8,737

Actually that is all fine and dandy, until you realize that each model had different options associated with them. So a SC with 1SB would have a different set of options within the package than the IROC.

the SC 1SB:
1) Base SC
2) Tinted Glass
3) A/C
4) Tilt Steering
5) AM/FM ERS stereo

the IROC 1SB came with:
IROC equipment
Z28 Equipment
A/C
Tinted Glass
Tilt Steering
Floor Mats
INtermittant Wipers
AM/FM cassette with ERS
Power Locks
Power Windows
Power hatch release.

I think the 68,199 number is missing the 204 export number for 1985.

I'm curious where you found the number 295. While production build counts are available for individual 3rd gen Camaro options, counts based on a combination of options don't exist.

Thats funny. road tests for the 1985 IROC LB9 A4 are 14.7 to 15.2, That is quicker then the stock 69 Z/28.

Here is one for you. I own a 1988 Iroc convertible with the LB9 305 engine, 700R4 automatic transmission, G80 limited slip differential, G92 performance rear gears, 8NN and 9NN springs as came on the 1LE cars, and KC4 engine oil cooler. Yet when I look in the Camaro White book it specifies that G92 and KC4 are only available in the (IROC-Z coupe only) and not in the convertibles. Is it a mistake or is it rare? These items are listed on my SPID on the car and dealer invoice. The car has just over 17,000 original miles with original date coded tires.

Last edited by yo soy el warg; 09-24-2009 at 10:58 AM. Reason: Added 8NN and 9NN options.

Re: Rare Camaro Performance options

Trying to find the link that I printed but can't seem to find it now. It took me a while to find but if you type in 80's/ 90's gm production numbers on google paradise cruisers has a list, it seems to be the same list that I have but mine has more information. Here is a breakdown of 1990 Iroc -z's 5,507 made total. 1,294 were convertible, which leaves 4,213 Iroc-z coupe's, out of that 1,503 were 305 automatic's (no g92). Which leaves us 2,710 left, out of that 2,415 were 350 automatic's with g92, and what's left is 295 cars which are 305 T.P.I 5 speed, g92. As far as a 305 compared to the 350? In 1990 the 305 with the g92 PP had 230 horsepower, and the 350 had 245 very little difference id rather have 230 with a manual trans!

Yea its funny how every one goes crazy over the first gen camaro and how awesome they were on the streets, but yet they wont give a third gen a second thought despite it being light years ahead in every aspect of performance. Go figure. Although Im sure most of us are used to it by now.

Well this is good to hear because I just bought a 1988 305 700r4 tpi convert. I like blowing the doors off of cars and I figure if I have been doing that with a 92 25th anniv. 305 auto it can only get better with an IROC...
