1989 GTA

So my question is was 1989 the only US production year for the GTA with a 350 and FACTORY T-tops not including Canadian cars.

Re: 1989 GTA

Yes, 1989 was the only year you could get a factory 350/5.7L/L98/B2L with the factory T-Top CC1 in the states on the GTA.

People will frequently claim to have one that isn't a 1989 and it will be one of the following:
1) Canadian export
2) Aftermarket T-Tops
3) Not a factory 5.7

Re: 1989 GTA

from the way i read it too, it sure looks like it's true! I was a proud owner of one! My Flame Red Metallic is one of 6,820 that came with the CC1 ttops (based on GTA source page). With the 5.7L, it's considered one of 6,554 (which is 2/3s of all GTAs in 89 that was produced.)

I'm still a bit skewed on total 89 GTA (RPO Y84) productions numbers, because i forgot where i saw it, but supposively there were over 9000 GTAs built in 89, but since GTA source page have their own break down...i'm just going on based on what they say.

Re: 1989 GTA

So, the 1989 GTA 5.7 would be a rare car with factory T-tops then?

Re: 1989 GTA

If you consider 6,820 rare then yes - but that word has been truly abused over the last few decades when it comes to car production.

I had a long conversation with Jim Mattison (Owner of PHS - Pontiac Historic Services) several years ago at one of the conventions - his benchmark was cars that were built in quantities of less than 100. With that number he did not use color or options to get to a number of less than 100 it was body style and drive line configuration - for example....

96 RA IV/auto 69 GTO hardtops were produced so that would be considered RARE
310 RA IV/4spd 69 GTO hardtops were produced so that would not be considered rare by his measure.

Your benchmark may be different and this would be a great topic for a new thread but I've gone by his measure in putting together my Pontiac collection and have several cars that have survived in single digits.....but parted out my RA IV/Auto 69 GTO.

Re: 1989 GTA

That figure is for 1989 GTAs with the CC1 factory T-Tops on the GTA. So that includes the 305 as well as 350. There is no known source that can state how many of those 6,820 CC1 factory T-Top cars had the 350.

I would think the 1989 GTA with factory T-Tops and factory 350 are desired though may not be considered "rare", despite being a one-year only combo, as more than half of 1989 GTAs had factory T-Tops to make it a very popular item. I see them on the market frequently.

Re: 1989 GTA

I'm happy - I got one !!

And a 90 iroc vert, which they only did about 1264 of .... figure 50% probably went off to the crusher by now, so I wouldn't call it rare, but
something you don't see much of any more.

Yes I most certainly agree especially in our area you hardly ever even see 4th gen Trans-am's let alone 3rd gen GTA's. There are some predictions out there about the 89 being highly sought after especially since it's a one year only deal with the 350 t-top combo but I guess only time will tell???

Seems like the few that are on craigslist here in nj are beat to death or hacked up or just ridiculously overpriced like anyone is going to pay 4k for one that needs interior and paint work.

Yes, if it's the right car like I mentioned everything I've found local is just hacked up of just completely overpriced do you know of someone selling a decent 89'?
I'm in no rush though i've got an 87 GTA project right now that I'm working since I've sold my 87' 350 car a few months back
