stupid bolt!

I'm swapping out the interior in my car & the only thing holding me back is the bolt for the driver's seatbelt buckle, I completely covered it in WD-40, stripped 2 torx head wrenches, hurt my hand, went & bought a new set of wrenches, sprayed it down again, I even slid the 'straw' thing under the plastic & sprayed that, I torqued on that sucker till my hand hurt & it still won't turn.... now what?

I'd take my impact wrench to it if i could find it!

Re: stupid bolt!

Have you tried going underneath the car and soaking the backside of the bolt with wd40 or some rust eater type of stuff?

Re: stupid bolt!

Put vicegrips/channel lock pliers/spanner wrench on the handle so you have more torque on the torx.

Re: stupid bolt!

Get some long extensions so you get some leverage on it. When its way down in the carpet you really cant heave on it that hard

Be sure to hammer the torx into the socket so your dead sure it wont round or damage the bolt/tool

Pick up a 3/8 and 1/2 breaker bar from advance auto. If one bolt is rusted solid already you can be sure plenty more will be as well

Re: stupid bolt!

as far as the interior goes, this is the last bolt to get out, then i can pull up the carpet.

Re: stupid bolt!

wd 40 and pb blast and all that isnt the way to go, ok, take your tourqes and just put it on the bolt. then take a rubber mallet and hit it a couple times and use a breaker bar to get it out, if that dosent work, you have a problem on your hands. you dont need to use any lubes on this method

Re: stupid bolt!

yeah it seems the manufacturer doesn't want the seatbelts to come out for some reason. I also recommend tapping it a few times with some type of mallet and using a breaker bar, maybe persuade a friend to hold the socket steady as you try to break it loose, keep at it, it's gotta give some time. If not just drill the bitch out...

Re: stupid bolt!

Like mentioned above, "you can move the world with a lever if u had one big enough". Dont need to buy any new ones, i have some long pipes i have laying around made of aluminum or something, super light. Or if u dont have that, use the handle on your jack. Instead of wrenches, i bought the little torx "bits" that you can slide in a socket and use with a ratchet or a pry bar.

I then slid the pipe over the ratchet handle, and pulled or pushed (depending on your angle) and it made my work alot easier. No injuries, no effort.

Re: stupid bolt!

Yea, it's probably not rusted in, it's just that stupid trilobular bolt shaft design. Self locking and a total pain to remove. I'd replace all those bolts with allen head bolts when you finally get it out. WD-40 probably isn't helping, just get a bigger snipe on it.
If it's rounded now, then you're screwed. You'll probably have to drill it out or something. Maybe you can get a pipe wrench on it, or weld something to the bolt head to help remove it.

Re: stupid bolt!

I may have read it wrong, did you strip the bolt head, or the torx bit?

Re: stupid bolt!

Not enough brute force!

Get a half inch breaker bar and be done with it. Those bolts are only a pain if you use the incorrect size torx on them when trying to remove it for the first time.

Push comes to shove get the power tools out and be done with it. If that does not work, get a grinder and cut the bitch off. The other end will than be easily removed by drilling it.

Good luck.

Re: stupid bolt!

I would do what I had to do to get the bed bolts off my 88 Pickup, Get a small torch put a tank of map gas on it, heat that sucker up from the top until red, spray down with PB blaster, get under the car and heat up till red SOAK with PB blaster, with it soaked and still hot put a breaker bar, not a socket wrentch on it and a breaker tube on the handle for entra leverage do not use any extensions, and break it loose, I wouldn't grind it off, then you have to deal with getting the other part out.. KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND A BUCKET OF WATER WITH A RAG IN IT.. That should do the trick

Re: stupid bolt!

They are an off size- T47 in case you didn't know.
T45 will slip if the bolt is real tight.
If the head is damaged try using a T50 and hammer it all the way down in good, and replace it when you get it out. A T50 can work, but it doesn't really seat well.
You can't exactly replace them with ordinary allen head bolts. They have a larger shank to let the seatbelt rotate.

Re: stupid bolt!

ah.. I replaced one with a normal bolt, but the head was too big to get at easily to tighten it. I think I went back to my stock bolts later.
