red to black interior..... ideas??

I want to change my faded and ugly red interior into black. Im gonna buy black carpet (vendors? Is $200 good for molded carpet?)
Im also going to buy some black front sport seats from summit ($400). I dont care about the back seats. Im thinking of maybe putting a speaker box there.
Can i paint the interior plastic and make it look good? I tried a black apolstry paint on my sail panels and it looked like crap (paint dusting off etc...)
Im open for any ideas or suggestions....

From what I understand, SEM is the best place to go for interior paint- I tried the Duplicolor on my kick panels and it is scuffing off...

Just get some fabric and recover your sail panels- I used ultrasuede from Joanne's Fabrics and it looks TRICK!

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

I would highly recommend junkyard hopping. My Trans Am origianlly came with all Tan interrior and now its all black (check Cardomain). I replaced all the interior tan pieces EXCEPT the Trans Am Deluxe door panels...I got some interior/vinyl/upholstery paint from autoparts store and coated half the can to each door panel, and I must admit, they came out way better than I thought it would...I got all my normal thirdgen stuff, including rear seats and carpet, from jk...but you do have to clean it up a bit! good luck

You might be able to use Joanne's Fabrics material for the sunvisors, too.

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

For the interior plastics you could try that Fusion paint from Krylon. It works pretty well on plastic, doesn't remain tacky like most enamel paints do. Or you could go the route I'm probably going to take and cover all the plastic in black synthetic leather. Use a good quality spray adhesive like 3M and take your time and use a hair dryer to heat it up so it stretches and smooths out. I saw a post on here not long ago where someone did it with a 4th gen camaro and it turned out great. There was a link to one of the 4th gen forums that had more pics and a write-up about how he did it. You should be able to find it on a search here as he was asking if there would be any interest in a precut kit he was considering making for thirdgens. If you're going to get the fabric from Joann's, ask to get on the mailing list for their flyer. My wife gets it and there is always a 50% off coupon on the front of it.

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

I've seen a bunch of threads addressing this issue, this sort of sums up what they say:

1)Use adhesion promoter before dying/painting
2)SEM dye works best, followed by the duplicolor dye
3)I have yet to see anyone use Krylon Fusion and report good results.
4) Don't do any sanding at all, just clean the parts well
5) Put coats on light, and only do 2-3 at the most. Thicker paint/dye seems to be too soft and doesn't dry.
6) Give it plenty of time to dry.

Like I said, not my experience, but sort of sums up 4 or 5 threads. Hope this helps.

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

I'm planning on doing the same switch (red to black) My interior is in pretty good shape but I just don't like the red. I will probably get my seats recovered in black leather with red accents. I'm trying to find an interior plastic set to swap to.

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

In the end just getting the new pieces on half price day at your local Pick and Pull will be easier and better. Every piece I ever painted no matter the method has never looked as good as parts that were originally black. Oh, and I converted my 86 tan interior to black so I know from first hand experience.

Re: red to black interior..... ideas??

Yeah I am just doing a grey to black swap, did my own sail panels, and bought every peice of black trim for a swap for less then $30. Seats I'm probably going to do the ones from C.R.A.P., uncle works there, thus 50% of ish. Headliner is going to be the hardest part and back seats. Seat belts too if I ever decided to swap those.

Love Pick a Part =]

Easiest, cheapest, know what your getting and how to reinstall/ take apart.
