new carpet question

I'm gonna buy carpet for my 89 RS. Is it better to get the console cutout or no console cutout?

Re: new carpet question

Before you buy new carpet, try taking out your seats first. Taking out the seats (front and back) is a 15 minute job and you would be surprised how well you can clean the old carpet with them out. You just unbolt the seats. There are lots of guides here for replacing seats.

A warning about putting the seats back in: The nut for the front bolt of the back seat is just tack welded, and if you cross thread it, you can easily break it off (ask me how I know)
I did buy new carpet from stockinteriors.com. You do have to cut theirs and I would suspect most others too. The console is the worst part of replacing carpet. In order to remove it, you have to take out practically the entire entire interior. What would have been about a 2 hour job (including cleaning the old carpet) to replace my seats wound up taking 3 weekends and the results weren't any better than if I had cleaned the old carpet.

Re: new carpet question

My old carpet was too far gone, but once removed I was surprised at how much better quality the stock one was. Much sturdier and also had a nice rubber backing in spots. I bought mine brand new/never installed from someone on this forum. If I had to do it again I'd go for sturdiness as well as pre-cut. It would be worth the extra money to make for less trimming and a quicker install. Although I have a brand new look inside, the new carpet doesn't 'sit' as nice as the old one did.

Re: new carpet question

ok, so i'll get the console cutout. My carpet is screwed, There is holes in it and cigarette burns, as well as the seats. I'm getting new carpet, dash and console caps, and new seat covers from HAWKS unless the 1A guy gets back to me. There seat cover kits have free shipping and Hawks wants like 45 bucks.

Re: new carpet question

I got the one with the cut-out. Much easier to install as others have stated with the cut-out!!!!

I got mine from Rick's Camaro (they were running a BIG sale a couple of weeks ago on interior items). Just like you, mine was shot, the old owner had cut 1/2 of it out....not sure why???

Re: new carpet question

I just got new carpet from stock interiors with the console cut out. It makes it easier, but the cutout needs to be cut way back to the console bolt holes to get the carpet forward enough to fit in. But it helped. I just finished putting them in. Gonna let the sun do it's thing now.

Re: new carpet question

I too just replaced my carpet and I had to trim the console area back a little to get it to fit nicely. But as to being hard to do I did it in the parking lot of my work in 2 1/2 hours. But i've ripped a lot of interiors down

Re: new carpet question

The hardest part for me was finding the seatbelt holes. Even after I made the holes, the backing wanted to wrap around the screws.

Re: new carpet question

To the Moderators.

I need to replace the carpeting in mine later. I have read that the console hole isn't big enough. No problem as it gives a good starting point. As to cleaning I agree to try it first if your carpet isn't already ruined. Mine has cigarette burns between the back seat cushions and is wore out in places. If I wasn't going a different color I would consider cleaning the back cargo area though.
