Nitrous kit - what ELSE do I need?
I'm looking at the NOS Sniper spreadbore kit, $389 is hard to turn down. I am however cynical I can have my finger on the button for $400, I think it'll balloon by the time all is ready.
So my question is this, what ELSE do I need that's not in the kit?
- I'm not sure if a purge kit is really NEEDED. I'm not looking for max consistency at the track or anything. I could add it later if need be.
- This kit is apparently setup for 100, 125 and 150HP. What is needed to upgrade it to a 200HP shot say? New solenoid (s)? Just different jets? New line and all?
-What's the limit on a 4AN line anyway?
-I was thinking about putting a small (1 gallon) tank under hood, (drivers side, where the battery is not), and some kind of teeny electric fuel pump. Can I get away with the mr gasket $40 electric pump, or am I going to need a $100 pump? Any rules on what I need to run for a tank?

I will try and feild what I know.
-Skip the purge kit. This does not gain you anything.
-As for upgrading to a 200 shot I am not sure about that. Best advice to give you is call NOS and ask them.
-I think 4AN line is good up to 250hp. But this would be another good question for NOS
-As for a seperate fuel system. You could get away with a cheap pump. All it has to do is put out about 8 psi. Not to bad mouth cheap pumps but do you know what could happen if the pump fails?......Boom. As for a tank you will need to run a fuel cell.
-Oh and buy a bottle heater. This is a must in my opinion.

A fuel pressure switch to close the solenoids if your fuel pressure drops below safe levels.

Bottle heater? aww, that's getting really expensive isn't it? I figured that would only be useful if i'm using it up FAST, ie 20 seconds of shot at once, or two back to back runs, etc.

You could put a 1 gallon fuel cell under the hood. It's the size of a 4L milk jug.

Perfect. I wouldn't be using that much nitrous at a time anyway (any more than i'd need to drain a 1 gallon tank).
Apeiron, any idea on the going rate for 10 lbs of nitrous in the great white north? Or, better yet, a source for it?

$130 heater < maybe

Davenport fills nitrous. IIRC it's something like $5/lb, but I don't know. I've still got a bottle of medical grade stuff that was filled sometime in the 70s. If you want to see how frightening nitrous systems were before the days of commercially available kits, I've got something to show you.
I think your budget for fuel lines is a bit low, I'd plan for $100 to cover everything you could possibly need.

I have about the same setup as you have mentioned. A sniper as a first stage and a NX kit for second stage. The fuel cell is mounted where the battery used to be with a Holley blue pump. I had to get a special cell that was about the size of a battery from a company on ebay. It wasn't listed but when I contacted them they made it for me for the same price. $75 if I recall correctly. The ones in summit were too tall and required cutting into the battery tray. Make sure to get a fuel pressure safety switch. They are adjustable. Mine is set at 5 psi. Just in case of fuel pump failure. An Advance auto parts 5-6 psi fuel pump can be used for about $30-$40.

I'll look into a cheapy parts store fuel pump. What would the application be for that? Just a "generic" carbureted electric fuel pump type of thing?
I saw dimensions for a few 1gal cells on summit, 6x6x12". I'll measure and check, but I wouldn't be against cutting out that plate if need be.
The only fuel lines I can think i'd need would be from the mini tank, to the pump, to the fuel pressure switch. After that I think the -4AN is supplied to go to solenoids and to the plate. I imagine a bit of hardline and some 45* flare fittings and 45* inverted flare -> NPT adapters would get the job done. $100?!? I wasn't planning on using those colourful anodized blue fittings and the woven metal braided lines or anything...
Ok, either way i'm looking at $700 when the smoke clears, to use a $400 nitrous kit. Sounds about right, after realism kicks in.

Why use an under hood fuel cell? I don't think you're at the level that race gas is needed, not that it would hurt though.

Nah, i'd most likely fill it with 92 or 94 octane, whatever is available.
I just don't think my mechanical pump on block would be able to pull enough fuel through the stock 3/8" line to power the engine AND a 200 shot of nitrous. Planning for a max of 200HP, start at 100HP obviously.
Other than an underhood fuel cell, what other choices do I have? T it right before the mech pump, and do the electric pump there for the nitrous, and the mech pump for the engine - but i'm not sure about that. I'm guessing 400 crank HP, plus 200HP nitrous eh?

If you want a very basic nitrous kit you can put one together part by part for under 400 dollars easily. I do it all the time for people, you don't need alot of the fancy add ons like purges and such, and if you're logical on your setup you can get great results out of mix and match nitrous parts.

I figured it'd be cheaper to buy the kit. I know I can get the kit sans bottle for $100 less, but the bottle is most likely around $100 anyway right? Plate is...? Solenoids are...? Jets are...?

Alright, i've come up with another question;
Is it legal (NHRA, IHRA, DOT whatever) to install the nitrous bottle behind the drivers seat? I'm thinking on the floor, basically at the back left passengers feet. This way I can reach around to open the bottle, rather than using a remote bottle opener, etc.

Run the vent line forward then down through the shifter hole perhaps? Or is there a max length on the vent line?
