Every mini starter i've ever used only goes about half way into the teeth of the flexplate.
Some causes for a grinding starter can be,...cracked flexplate, wrong starter bolts, incorrect...

It was used on older manual transmissions. The z-bar pivot ball goes there. Its a linkage that would operate the clutch fork before hydraulics got popular.

No, but i've had them rub on the 'frame' or hump over the k-member. Check for full steering lock to lock. Rubbing on that area would tend to push the spring outward.

I measured from the top of the rear intake bolt to the wiper cowl, 8 1/2". Standard deck MarkIV.

Perhaps your oil pump pick-up fell off? Try dumping an extra 2-3 quarts of oil in and see if the knock goes away & the gauge starts working correctly again.

Make sure to order it through summit, etc, because holley/weiand will jerk you off for months and months. Always behind and waiting on one...

I've fixed a few broken/cracked starter bolt ears, but have always had the broken piece. I TIG weld it back together using stainless, (high nickel), rod.
