I think my timing is off 180 * did I hurt anything

I started the zz430 tonight but it wouldent run more than about 5 seconds and it didnt run smooth at all. I tried it quite a few times while i turned the distributer but it still wouldent takeoff. Tomorrow Ill turn the distributer 180 degrees and see if I have it wrong right now. My question is did I hurt anything by having it off 180 degrees. Ive done it with other engines Ive had in the past and never hurt a thing. but this motor was about 5 grand and you Know Murphys law.

If your distributer was in backwards it wouldn't start at all - just an occasional scary backfire. Did you try advancing or retarding it a little? If it's too far in either direction it might try to run but not successfully.

It won't hurt the engine, just make it backfire or run badly.

It will not run at all at 180 degrees off, You probably just have the timing way off.

I pulled my Number 1 plug again to find TDC The distributer was off 180. I now have it running at 1l* BTDC with a 800 rpm Idle. It runs good but it diesels when I turn it off what do you think is off?

Advance the timng a bit more...assuming the idle is set correctly and you don't have vacuum leaks, etc.

Im having a similar problem myself. My buddy said man your cars running bad,i think maybe your timing chain jumped. So he pulled out my distributor when i went in the house.I came back out and tried to put it back in,Well what i didnt know was that he also switched my firing order on me,that was the main reason it ran so rough.Well i fixed the firing order and tried to re-align my distributor, and the car now runs, but it seems like its not quite right.I try to advance the timing and the car runs really bad so then i do the exact opposite and i turn it the other direction,it does the same thing. Is it possible the distributor could be off a couple of teeth?..Thanks guys,

82Camaro,

I have run my engine at 180 out. If the timing is right (or wrong as the case is) it will run. I know this because the headers got so hot they were glowing red and you could see it. I lit a cigarette on them with it ideling. Trust me, it will run (be it like crap but it will)
