350, 305, Whats the difference?

ok heres the deal.

ive got a trans am with a 305, buddys got a firebird with the 350 that i can have parts off of.

I havnt seen it yet. but i hear that 305's and 350's look the same and have compatible parts.

I mean, isnt the 305 just a downtuned 350, built to conform better to emissions laws? Just how compatible are these two engines?

Are the exhaust manifold bolt patterns the same?
what about the intake?
did the 350's come with rochester quadra jets?
is the distributor the same?

...and all the 350's were attached to an automatic, eh?

anyway, if i can get it running i might just take the whole car. he said he'd sell it to me for a hundred bucks. the only problem is i got no where to put it. and well, i havnt seen it yet.

cheers.

LoL this made me laugh pretty good.

No a 350 is 350 cubic inches (5.7L) where as a 305 is 305 cubic inches (5.0L). Its a bigger motor (and yes tuned a bit better) so its going to be a bunch faster, its just...more cubes.

As far as whats compatible i think everything will bolt on between the two motors. Couldnt tell you the differences but i would think the only things youd be interested in would be possibly the heads and cam if they were any different.

My neighbor a year ago told me his mechanic-dad said you could just bore a 305 out to a 350. Granted, if I didn't know anything about engines, it would sound like a good idea. How do you respond to a claim like that.... I just wanted to smack him upside his head.

so what is the story on the 305 then? i know that gM built the 350 first. I always thought that they came out with the 305 a while after to conform to those smog laws and stuff.

any word on that distributor? if the cam's the same, then probably the distributor is too, eh?

Yes it is (or can be) the same.

Everything about them is the same, except the bore; and things that are directly affected by the bore or displacement, such as pistons & rings, head chamber size (although they interchange), etc.

No you can't bore a 305 out to a 350. Their bores are more than ¼" different.

Anything that bolts to the outside of one will bolt to the other, subject to year model issues.

the 305 has a smaller bore. the block is a diffrent casting. it cannot be machined to have the larger 350 size bore.

the 350 and 305 are small block chevys. one of the things chevy is famous for is keeping parts compatible. the small block chevy engine came out in the late 50s. the distrib, oil pump, water pump, heads, ect that worked on thoes work on current motors, and vica versa (with a few exceptions)..
the engine just evolved with better parts over the years. but the basic layout has remained the same.

the distrib is the same.. you can use it if you wish, athough theres no performance benifit.
pull the motor
junk the car.
start reading and learning.
once you get a handle on this stuff, you can build the 350 up and swap motors.

totally. you know. its funny, because i already did an engine swap. i swaped a 305 for another 305.

i did it because my first 305 burned oil really bad, and eventually gave out on me. i got the other 305 for free. out of a buick regal. so i kept the beast goin in a pretty thrifty way.

i do wanna keep that 350. for a hundred bucks thats a deal. my only problem is that i dont have any space for it.
