What would be the ideal cam ?

For a 383 with TF23 heads and a pretty much stock TPI except SLP runners and an Accel base ?

The XR270 is pretty close. Maybe a 276hr I would use 1.6 rockers at least on the intake. If you want the absolute best call cammotion and give them your combination. Gearing also.

I think this cam is too small right now with my 350. I think I need a little more duration and definetly a wider LSA then the current 110. Does anyone else have any opinions ?

well the ideal cam is the one my father came up with when he was 14. instead of a cam it used electromagnets and a computer to control when the valves open, how far and how long. With the computer the lift and dur would be infinity varable depending on the load and RPMS. wow could you imagin that a VTEC that works all the time from 0 to 10000000000 RPMS. We still have his drawings that he drafted in collage for his professor. Damn if only he patended the the thing or sold it to one the car companies for much dinero, damn I could have 1 of every model F-body made. hummmm anyway that it the ideal cam....for any engine.

Actualy I've heard of plans for such an engine however a standard 12 volt system isn't enough to operate the system, apparently they are waiting till they switch to a 48 volt system which isn't going to happen any time soon. Heard bout it from my collage instructor who used to be a service manager at a gm dealership. He likes digging up info on all the new fancy gadets coming out for cars.

For that set-up, you could consider the cam I am running, the LT4 HOT Cam from GMPP. The cam is more made for shorter runner engines, but it should still work well. The specs are 218*/228* @ .050 with .492/.492 lift with 1.5 rockers.

That's a smaller cam then what I have right now. Surely that wont work in a bigger engine like a 383.

i would have to agree, the xr276hr would be all the bigger you'd want to go aside from the listed gm cams. unported the trick flow heads are going to feed well at that lift. the main problem is your intake set up. your feeding much more cubic inch now and going with a bigger cam is just going to worsen the intake problem. even with the upgrades to the tuned port, it is only going to flow just so much. i'd recomend keeping the cam lift below .525 and duratin under 235@50. you won't need to rev it as high to make power, it's got cubic inches to make the power. if your looking to rev it and go with the bigger cam, your going to need a mini ram, super ram, or t-ram.

One of my good friends has a hydraulic roller comp cams that has 530/530 lift and 230/230 duration on a 110 lobe. I think that would be a middle ground in between all the cam recommendations so far, wouldn't you think ? I'm going to keep the TPI and I don't plan on revving it past 5500-6000.

I was recommended 234/234 .488/.488 for my 388. I went with the flat-tops (11:1 CR) and running a flat cam. I got mine from Summit ($79) it's on a 114LSA for a 'smooth' idle, but it still will be choppy somewhat and was told this cam will pull 10.5 to 11" Hg at 750rpm idle.
