Just thought I'd post a few good pics that show what to do to a Vortec head When switching to a larger 2.02x 1.60 valve.
These are not my heads but mine are just the same.
There is a lot of disinformantion floating around on what can and should be done to a vortec head for increased performance.
A picture says a thousand words. Not just a truck head anymore. The nice thing is you don't have to be a porting guru to do this.

Can only tell ya that my heads flowed 245+ intake and 180 ex
Was hard to get a flow reading on the intake side cause there was so much air velocity that it keep sucking in the inlet radius puddy. We gave up at 245+. (Free flow bench test.) After playing with it 6 times we got a good test so good enough. Kinda knew how they were going to turn out cause others have done the same thing. Just wanted to verify what was expected from the mods done.
The radiused inlet (puddy or fixture) on the intake ports are critial to getting accurate flow test numbers. Especially on a small high velocity port like a SBC vortec.
Without the radius on the port opening the tests are meaningless.
No track testing yet, but can tell ya the engine is a goer for sure. Hold on Newt!! We're headed for the alfalfa!!!
28 in....no pipe on the exhaust. I did not port these heads but I know the guy that did. [very good porter] They were not maxed out either. More flow to be had.
If I can dig up the sheet from a set I did. [more work then the ones above] I'll put the numbers up. Those went low 280's
Good to see people at home are trying to port vortec
But so and so meet a guy who knows a guy thats friends with a guy that says they cant be ported

Hey, I'm new to the sight. Your heads look great. I run vortecs on my 91 bracket car. Set up for added lift. People call these truck heads, but they work great. Run consistent 8.40's with a voodoo 256 hydraulic flat tappet. Can't go wrong with ported vortecs.

Sonix I don't know what of if they were ported to any specific off the shelf gasket.
I believe these heads were ported for a Super Vic manifold that had also been ported. Used on a 10.5:1 406 it made over 500hp.
You don;t nessessairy have to make the port opening quite that big. EG: on 350 or 383 with a dual plane manifold.
But just wanted to show some good pics of nicely done vortecs.
Again these are not my heads. Mine are simular but theses pics are very good at showing what they are suposed to look like in finished form.
Hey f-bird. I was curious as to what cam, compression, and times you are getting out of your vortec 406. I am working on building one. So far professional products single plain, 10.5:1, 800 holley, I run 456 gears. Looking for 6000-6500 rpm. Any suggestions?
just doing my research on these heads, thought i would bump up this topic and see if theres any track testing and any pictures of the exhaust ports yet. As we all know the intake ports are rather large, the exhaust ports are rather mediocre, and theres alot of metal to shave away to match up to the exhaust gasket.
first time post, long time lurker , what gasket did you use to outline the intake port, and whats your opinion of the Patriot vortec head , it already has the 2.02 valve and a 185cc runner ,,, building a bracket engine , 4.030 x 3.625 stroke , 7500 max rpm

While you'll see vortec heads pro ported for full race application with a very high lift cam.
.600"+ my head were ported to optimize flow from seat to .500" lift for a engine that uses a relatively moderate street cam and rpm. Optimum port/bowl size/shape is a bit different for a (street) engine where the valve stays relativley close to the seat (.500" or less) as compared to a full race effort port job for a higher lift race roller cam where the valve is further from the seat. (longer duration and higher average valve lift.)
I ported my vortecs to match the felpro #1255 vortec gasket. I did not touch the intake manifold.
As I posted earlier the pics I posted are not my cylinder heads. They are someone elses.
They are nice clear pics of a very good porting job on vortec heads. I did not open up the intake port at the inlet quite as much as these pics show. These were done for for a super vic vortec single plane manifold that also was tweeked a bit. My intake manifold was/is untouched.
