whats the best oil to use for new engine break in?
I have heard from a few guys that I should run a motor oil that does NOT have any detergants in it during the first few thousands miles on a new engine. What type of oil is out there that doesnt have this detergant?

Axle/Gears: BW 3.45 9-Bolt
You'll be find with just a standard motor oil. I would however recommend a straight 30w for the first 500 miles. Then switch to a multi-weight oil such as 5w-30. Make sure to prime the engine before you start it.

I think I read somewhere that you're supposed to run a synthetic blend for so many miles with a new engine. Then switch to full synthetic.
Call up the oil and/or engine manufacturer to be sure.

yes, synthetic is not goot at all for breakin and can damage your motor, depending on your configuration .

you CAN'T run synthetic on a brand new motor. Only after 500+ miles. Your rings won't seat and your cam will go flat. Your headlights also won't work

How about none of the above. New conventional motor oils lack certain additives that come in rather handy and synthetics are too good at their job to allow proper break-in (in flat tappet cam engines- there is still debate over the rings on roller cam engines, etc., - that's 'nother bag for another thread).
I like diesel oils like Delvac (NOT Delvac1) or Rotella T (NOT the synthetic or blend) for break-in. Or a conventional with the GM additive... but The Delvac and Rotella are rather easily had.
