I've done an engine swap and with my Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and an Edelbrock carb I am really pushing clearance haha. I am looking for an air cleaner that is very small. I've heard of one that sits on carb but then it folds down instead of up? I cannot seem to find it and was wondering if anyone has heard of something like this? I know of 2" regular elements but I would rather not go that way because I would have to buy a cowl hood scoop as a last resort. Thanks!

Think about how far the air cleaner lid will be from the top of the carb.

What difference does it make how tall the filter media is, if all of the air has to squeeze through a little crack on top of the carb, and IMMEDIATELY do a sharp 90° to go down the carb bores?

The combo of parts you mention is roughly stock height. There should be no problem at all fitting a suitable breather under the hood, without getting into the highly undesirable situation as described above.

I'm having the same problem. Performer rpm intake and a holley 750dp carb. Without an aircleaner the carb hits the hood.

Classic Industries Camaro used to stock an air cleaner for clearance problems from the hood and HEI ignition. I have one on my El Camino. I don`t see it in their catalog, you may want to search their site, also J.C. Whitney sometimes stock things like that. The main problem is, I don`t understand your question very well. How about some specs on your car like:year, make, model, smog/no smog?

I actually had a 750 on there, and I cannot make clearance for a filter either. Im hoping that with the Edelbrock carb (which I have not put on yet) can eliminate the spacer for an extra inch.

Sofa, are you saying that there shouldn't be a reason for clearance issues?

There is an air filter I bought from Edelbrock. I got it at an Advanced Auto Parts and it fits. Its part number is 1207 or 1206?

The L88 breather doesn't fix the basic problem; if the air cleaner LID is dropped too low to try to clear the hood, it can easily be too close to the top of the carb, no matter what BASE is used.

However, the L88 base fits Holley carbs better than just about any other readily available one; and does a better job of directing and smoothing the air flow as well. That being one of the worst things about most cheeeep aftermarket air cleaner boxes..... too much attention to "looks", not enough attention to FUNCTION.

But, with a Performer intake, which only raises the carb a small amount compared to stock, you shouldn't have any trouble AT ALL getting plenty of clearance. The L88 breather will fit easily (as far as height.... not sure how well it plays in the same sandbox with a Carter carb, being that it was designed for a Holley...), or a stock L69 dual snorkel, which is what I'd suggest, since ANY open element is going to rob power by picking up hot underhood air instead of cool dense exterior air.

On a aftermarket holley carb the choke horn has to be removed or shortened.
OEM holleys that came on the origional musclecars had a lower choke horn than the aftermarket holleys. The bowl vent tubes has to be shortened. At that point using a 14x 3" filter the "L-88 air cleaner" will support over 500hp without restriction or airlfow upset. If it worked on 560HP L-88 and ZL1 corvettes and 450hp LS-6 Chevelles , With a few mods it can work for you.
AN edelbrock carb needs only a 1/2" edelbrock aircleaner spacer. The choke plate and choke horn is good as is. A banjo style fuel inlet fitting is nessessary to clear the base. A electric choke may or may not clear.
A Qjet carb works without any problems as far as I know. (4MV style Qjets were stock on may of the cars this aircleaner came on.)
A big cap HEI distributor requires that a flat be made on the back side of the
aircleaner base to clear the HEI cap. (simple sheet metal trimming) the lid is ok.

The throttle cable linkage bracket will need to be lowered to clear the lower base height.

There is nothing stopping you from custom fabricating a aircleaner combining a L-88 base with a third gen L-69 base (a little cutting,welding and fitting) To get the best of both.
Lower base filter height, smoother air entry shape, cold air induction.
