paper clip test obd1 trouble????
Good afternoon! So I just tried this trick to look for codes. I am getting no flashing lights on dash but a clicking and buzz from around the egr (near the intake manifold) . ??????? Now when I start the car I get some smoke comimg from the egr location . Any thoughts??? Buy the way the key was only clicked forward when I did the test like its supposed to and I jumped out the top row two on the right.(5 & 6)

Make sure you're looking at the connector the right way up. It's terminals A and B and make sure you're actually contacting the pins. If you don't get flashing lights (at least 12s) when you turn the key to the ignition on position it may be a bad ecm. If you have the electronic egr unplug it and check it is closed. That to start with.

What year car - some you jump 5 & 6, some you jump 6 &12
https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6)

Thank you. No TPI, it’s a q-jet. I’ll do some digging. Not sure how just changing oil would cause it. But it’s an old car. I just bought it and am trying to start with basic maintenance. It runs fine.

And thus illustrates the biggest issue with bumping old threads , it's all too easy for present day posters to loose track of whose car goes with whose question

There are no "5, 6" pins. The cavities on the ALDL connector are identified with alphabetic characters, A through M. The diagram shows the connector as viewed from the front, where the assembly line connector or scanner would be plugged in.
If you suspect a wiring problem, test the voltage at terminal B to a known good chassis ground with the ignition turned on. The ground connection at terminal A can also be verified with an ohmmeter to a know good chassis ground. If either are not connected the diagnostic mode will not occur.
If the +5VDC and good ground are present, it may help to disconnect the ECM from power for a period of several hours. This will erase all learned data tables but they will rebuild as the vehicle is operated for a few days. The easiest way to do this is to remove a battery cable or the 20A ECM/Fuel Pump fuse under the hood.
It may also be helpful to remove the connectors at the ECM, inspect and clean as necessary, and reseat them. Again, ECM power should be off for this.
