please help have a blown gasket and engine clatter

so i bought a 91 rs 305 v8 tbi ALL stock camaro, bottem line it was running great and i did a tune up on it,i got the spark plug wire firing order wrong and tried starting it up and it wanted to turn and didnt fire up (this is before i new the firing order was wrong)i got it to fire and it poped off and ran sluggish but when it fired up i noticed an engine clatter,my question is do you think that the firing order being wrong could result in something as bad as a warped head or something other than a bent rod, spun bearing or something that would need machining,im getting coolant in my oil and coolant coming from the block so i know a gasket is blown,im just worried about the clatter, because i cant afford a rebuild or any machining, but i know a rod or something that doesnt require an engine drop i can fix,my throttle bottle didnt catch flame but there was NOOOOOOO pop or banging or anything that would indicate anything too too harmfull happining,im just thinking that it over heated some how and maybe the wrong firing order caused something to bend, have any of you guys had experiences with bad firing orders burning pistons or anything excessively harmfully happening to an engine??i cranked it over quite a few times with this in place,im just praying that i didnt crack the head and i dont have the tools, time, and especially the money to rebuild, get machined,or anything other than the head gasket and a rod n bearing fix or something that i can fix :/
thanks in advance for any helps guys this sites helped me out alot and i plan on giving any experience i can on this site this camaro is my new baby and im trying hard to keep together on it but i just cant afford a rebuild but would love too-richard

I know a bad firing order can do some damage to the valve train and possibly to the internals. What I am wondering is what do you mean you have coolant coming from the block? Do you mean from between the head and the block, or do you mean literally from the block? If you have coolant coming from the block that is a bit more than a bad head gasket, especially with the fact you have engine noise.

Re: please help have a blown gasket and engine clatter

yeah, its coming from in between the head and block, but the car also seems like its over heating as well, havent ran it since all this happened last week, gonna put in an external temp gauge and swap the oil because the gauges inside dont work,or dont seem too O_O i know the tachs not working, the clatter might possibly be from not getting enough lubrication due to coolant leaking threw, highly unlikely though but couldnt hurt to hope

Yeah, do the head gaskets and oil change before starting the car again. if the clatter continues after that let me know and I will try to point you in the right direction.

Re: please help have a blown gasket and engine clatter

so just updating on my thoughts due to massive research and alot of help from other mechanics input,i cant do a compression check yet do to the headgakset being blown and dont want to even attempt to start it in this condition,it only ran for a few minutes once i knew the gasket was blown,i want to check for metal shaving in the oil but its difficult at this point because of how long the the car ran after this problem would probably not give any shavings, ive seen other videos of rod knock and engine clatter and mine sounds alot less loud but does stay constant with rpms i also had a fiero that we concluded had a spun cam bearing due to the heads not oiling up and the clatter was pretty dam loud and dry,so my plan is to swap the gasket and inspekt as much as a can without dropping the engine and pull the rod and check then throw it back together and do compression checks leak down tests etc.any imput or tips or advice on things to check are more than welcome and appreciated.OH AND ALSO i could of sworn i heard a light sound of something loose in the engine like something very small was bouncing or jumping, but it wasent a fast sound sort of like when you hear something in the dryer that probably got left in your pants a very light untimed sound,so gives me a little more lean towards a bearing but i heard spun rod bearings cause a pretty loud sloppy noise?also im a dam good metal worker/welder so any questions on welding ask away

Re: please help have a blown gasket and engine clatter

When a head gasket gets bad and coolant in the oil many times it takes the bearings along with it. Not saying this is your problem but if you get a chance to pull the pan check a few of them

Re: please help have a blown gasket and engine clatter

so update guys sorry for being dumb work stress and this car stress has my mind goooooone ten hour shifts as a plumber for pre fab homes (very high end completely custom ones)so i inspected closer and i guess its not my heads,BUTT my intake manifold thats leaking and ive researched that that can cause coolant in the oil,and do to the gasket being blown it would in terms cause a leak, which ive also read that can cause engine ticking, which is what i would consider mine because its very faint not a loud dry type of sound and i see the top end oiling up,i will inspect the rod bearings and pull the rod it sounds like #7 or #5 which is opposite side of where i see it leaking but still if its a gasket blows it it blows, this makes more senses to me personaly because the car sounded great untill the backfire and i get it can cause a nasty amount of exhaust pressure and i did have to give it some gas to get it going, hopefully its just that,87,000 original miles ALLL stock and ran like a champ before this problem, was a little wierdness, whenever id drive it at around 20-30 mph and let off the gas sometimes it would feel like it didnt want to go down, kind of like cruise control was on but that would happen every so often, also i remember my oil pressure would go off the charts when id start it up and would go around 40 then when i gave it gas it would go completely off the dial, but sometimes it wouldnt?but it also has a small electrical issue, tach went out after the guy said an after market stereo was installed, just throwing little things out there for arguments sake, but it seems kind of wierd the knock happening right after that first engine start up and missfire, and then also for it to be a blown headgasket and a piston, bearing, rod, lifter, burned valve, issue you know?the intake just "seems" to make more sense due to the fact that i can visibly see coolant coming from it you know?also guys to give me a little more evidence for chain of events and so forth of problems, about how long do you think it takes for the coolant to turn the oil into the milky substance?because after the backfiring issue and engine ticking i let it set id say a couple days a week TOPS and that was after i heard the ticking then shut the car off i feel if only a little got in there and it set unmoved it wouldnt do much attempted combined, because when i finally found out it had coolant in the oil it was black and i could visible see the green color on the dipstick but this was after driving it around the block for maybe 5 minutes or less,im just looking for as much input, advice, knowledge, tips anything you guys have to offer for when i get to yanking stuff apart on friday >,love this site and just wanna keep you guys posted, wanted a camaro since 18,24 now and finally got one and its sitting in the driveway lol, have a pic on my page of the outside

It only takes a couple minutes for oil to contaminate oil. If your oil pressure is fluctuating then you probably have a bad rod. Keep us posted on the condition of the bearings. Was the car sitting before you bought it? Also check your valvetrain and make sure everything is correct there.
