URGENT: how to place gas tank

Am in the dreaded process of putting my new gas tank in, and Im up to my limits with this job. I have absolutely no idea how these are expected to go in, the lack of room is astonishing!!! I dropped my axle completely, shocks, exhaust, springs ALL REMOVED!!! there seems to be no way of getting the filler neck in and simultaneously placing the tank up against the frame. There is seemingly no end to this nightmare of a job. If anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated.

I have dropped my gas tank several times in my 83 Z28. I had help and we twisted and turned the tank to slowly feed the filler neck up into position. Then we lifted the tank up and held it in place with one person and a small bottle jack. The key thing we did was to take it slowly and not force anything. We had to pull it back out and twist and turn until we got the right angle to get the filler neck up. I did take out the plastic shroud around the filler neck to give us some more wiggle room. But I never removed the axle, we worked around it. It is not fun nor easy but it can be done Another key aspect is to have the car jacked up as far as possible. I don;t have a lift, we used large jack stands and a borrowed air powered end lift/jack and got the car about 2 feet off the ground. This gave us enough room to drop the tank and put in the replacement. I have since pulled the tank back out because I decided to replace all the fuel lines with Stainless Steel lines since I found several rust holes in the old ones.

Have somebody look through the filler door and guide the neck into place. Probably just missing the hole over and over and over again.

Some 60-year-old woman installed these by herself all day in the factory.

...with LOTS of practice, into an unassembled vehicle, with a pneumatic lift, and perhaps other assembly aids.

It was easier in the past.

And it's worse in the future.

Hopefully the 3rd gen is somewhere in between.

Update: cut open where the filler neck went and slammed it in, was the only option besides removing the entire differential which I don't have a proper jack to do. Anyway, looks like I got it done... Lol
