Can my stock '86 SC beat a '95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX??

My friend just got a '95 Eclipse GSX, if you dont know it is a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. He is convinced that he will rip me in a race cause he has 210 hp and I only have 150 hp. His car is 5 speed and he can't get out of first gear too quick when he is driving regular on streets so i dont think he will be able to beat me cause he will be hesitant at the line. Oh and if you guys can can tell me how many pounds of tourque I have that would be great.

This should go in Theoretical and Street Racing, but I'll go ahead and reply. Sorry my friend, but you're going to be very disappointed. Unless you have bigger gears in that SC you're going to get toasted. Trust me, I know from experience.

I agree, your toast. Look at this way, there is no better reason to mod out an engine so you can beat a friend

Take something off of the engine and say that you are working on it that you you do not have to race.

Don't race unless you are somewhere near 190-200hp. Are you totally stock including exhaust, headers, cam, etc? Is there a 305 or 350 (probably not) under your hood? What gears do you have? If the answers are not good then mod up, then race. Your only hope is that he doesn't no how to use that 210 hp and you can get a big lead, but keep an eye on the rear view mirror. Let us know because I got a feeling your gona race him anyway.

Its a 305...I'm not dissapointed at all...for a car that is worth a mere $1500 and he bought his car for $6500 I think if he didnt win he better get his money back. This is my first car and i am happy with it and i dont even want to race it is just that he got a new car and feels he has the need to brag. When i purchase my second car then we will see who wins...I'm trying for a 4th gen camaro 6 speed 350 so i think we will race then and then we will see who doesnt want to race. Thanx alot.

To answer your question, I believe that you have a little more than 240 Ft-lbs of torque (I have 240 but not sure about the '86)
You probably have 170 Hp or so also... I would still say you get beat b/c his car is lighter and that Hp advantage is there... but you probably beat him out with torque.

I pushed my friends car up a hill without a problem, it was funny as hell because he had vapor lock and we needed to get it to the top of the driveway, I suggested that I push it up to the top with my car and all my friends thought I was joking... I showed them

BTW it was a Toyota tercel loaded with 300 Lbs of cargo... probably about 2400 Lbs total.

Your friends got a fast car under him. He's making more power to start with, plus he's lighter and has a 5 speed. Not to mention that the GSX's are All Wheel Drive. If he know whats hes doing he can launch from about 4-5000 rpms with the turbo spooled up with very little if any wheel spin. You never know though, and as long as your safe about it, it never hurts to try.

The GSX is actually heavier than the 3rd gen since it has a little more weight due to the All Wheel drive. My friend has a 95 GST, FWD Turbo and his car runs 15.2 in the quarter.
I was able to get my LG4 powered 86 Trans Am to run 14.9 in the 1/4mile last year.
I plan to have my car running in the single digits in about 2 years or so with a 350 Twin Turbo motor.

Stock vs stock he's got at least a second on you in the quarter mile, probably more. In otherwords he will quite literally embarrass you completely with a 10+ car length win... That is assuming he drives the car close to properly.

And with very little money/time invested he can run alot stronger with a couple key mods and increased boost from the turbo. And then with a clutch burning AWD launch he'd be hard to beat on the street. There's alot of crazy fast DSMs around.

One of my ex's had a '97 GSX turbo, bone stock I got a 15.1 out of it. A guy I know has an AWD one that's run a best of 11.7 (boost cranked way up) but runs consistent high 12's in street trim. A stock GSX unfortunatly will beat or run even w/ just about any 3rd gen that rolled out of the factory w/ the exception of some of the 5.7's.....
